Weeeeee!

Yes, I'm so stoked and relieved I almost wet my pants!

I'm not a U.S. resident so I can't directly help by calling senators and stuff... I'll just keep supporting my favourite radio stations by donating US$ I made in SL via PayPal which I have no intention of exchanging into yen anyways.

Thankoo for the heads-up!

Hail to the Power of positive B*tching.
With so many people Writing to their representatives something had to Break. They either had to renegotiate, or face Congress doing it For them.
This is a Good step, But Keep writing. Let your representatives know that ANY deal is not a Good deal, It has to be fair, and Keep net music reachable.

Angel.

Seems kind of odd I can't find anything on Google News about the reprieve, aside from the one article at Wired:

http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&ned=us&ie=UTF-8&ncl=1117993135&scoring=n

You'd think it would have been picked up by a number of sources; most of the stories released in the past few hours are still focusing on the lost decision in court and don't sound very cheerful about prospects ...

I don't understand the whooping here from reading the BBC account: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6896152.stm

There seem to be two separate events.

One is that a court denied a stay of the royalty fees, allowing them to take effect unless Congress acts.

The other, from the Wired article, is that one of the companies that stood to receive those fees, SoundExchange, has agreed not to enforce the new, higher rates for the time being.

Very cool. Of course they wouldn't let it go down in flames...it's only just begun really.

The CRB gets proven that if they can't be reasonable, the whole kaboodle gets removed from their hands. SoundExchange, the fee collectors, made the one realization that the CRB didn't. The higher fees will mean less money actually being paid, because the internet radio will go out of business.

While they aren't out of the woods yet, it's nice to see that my favorite stations aren't going to have to close down for the moment ;)

All I said was reprieve. Perhaps I used too many exclamation points, but I was caught up in the moment.

No, no, not criticizing you Raymond; merely caught wondering at the semi-euphoria that followed in the next 4 or 5 posts.

This is so NOT good news. It merely means that only those web stations licensed through Sound Exchange will be given a temporary...TEMPORARY...reprieve from crushingly high rates and fees.
It's a rather brilliant manuever, geared toward dragging out the fight, and robbing it of steam while the battle now moves to the legislature.
Be VERY careful what you decry as a "victory" in these kinds of struggles. The fat cats have grown craftier, more manipulative, and subtle over the past several decades. Take a look at what the telecom industry has done with cable franchising in the past few years.

I agree with you, but I don't know how brilliant it is in the long term. Look where greed got the record companies. I only purchase CDs at live shows now, never through the outlets that screw the musicians and gouge the public.

This is not even remotely accurate. The CRB made ruling that everything that SoundExchange asked for would become the new regulations and rejected virtually all other input. Then the CRB refused to hear any more about the case. The CRB appointed SoundExchange as the designated authority for collecting all such fees, just as SoundExchange wanted.

You are correct, I did get that wrong. I just posted from what I understood, which isn't a great deal. Either way, they need the ability to decide taken from their hands.. or they will find they won't be making any more money.

I do wonder about those internet radio stations that are airing the 'independents' of music.. Do they have to pay the fees, if they are paying TO the independent artists? (No record company middle men)
