I remember when I first showed my son SL (he was in the National Guard at the time) and he commented how he could so so many military uses of a virtual world like this, especially in the area of mental health. We both really thought it would be much farther off though and if a University had not been involved, it likely would have been - we know how fast the government folks are at stuff. I think it is cool to see these uses for SL.
