How to turn on translator?

It depends on the product. There should be some instructions coming with the translator when you bought it. If it still isn't clear even after perusing the manual, ask the creator.

For offline translation, I recommend Google Translate: http://translate.google.com/translate_t#

As an aside: Do people really use translators regularly? I never saw the pressing need for using them. Even though I'm not a native speaker, English seems to work just fine as a lingua franca in SL.

I've seen some that don't need to be turned on, but which listen on a non-chat channel. That means anything needing translation should be prefaced with a slash and the channel number. So if it used channel 7, I'd say:

/7Je ne parle pas espagnol

...and hope it came up with something not too garbled in the target language.

It depends how much English you have, and where you're employing it. In most places in SL, I'd expect English to be the most useful language, but I do meet people from time to time who apparently don't know any more than "Hi!". For them, translators are incredibly helpful, if a little clunky.

Not to mention that for a non-native speaker (or writer, in this case), your English is excellent. Better than many native speakers I've met around here. I'd be happy to function half as well in another language.

well, there isnt any 'the translator' to turn on. sl does not have a preinstalled translator.
please avoid annoying everyone with that 'universal translator' spam thingo!
'simbolic translator' is not only free, it is the best i reckon.

Ferd's Free Translator beats Simbolic six ways from Sunday.

I'm not sure where to get it in world though...I got mine from SLVEC when I was still a Mentor and able to go there.

(Hey...it's a copy/trans "Mentor Special" version. I can drop you a copy.)

I have a 'simbolic translator' just wear and it there all time and ON. A bit of a problem as each time you log into SL you have to click the power button to turn if off. Would have preffered default to be off.
