I was looking for something.. a sound, used frequently in some Orientation island builds, and I started digging around in my inventory, looking for linden content that I could tear apart, and possibly find the sound I was looking for. I dug through my inventory, first searching for the actual object I was thinking of (no luck there).. and then moving on to more random items. Eventually I ran across the Waterhead infohub. Nevermind the weirdness of having an infohub in my inventory, I seem to have a few dozen instances of it, and a couple others as well!. Anyways, on the back of the waterhead infohub is a sort of "Linden freebie Vendor".. a multi-panel affair with a number of "click to get" items inside. As I dug through the contents of that infohub and it's various component parts, I did indeed find the sound I was looking for. The waterhead infohub in my inventory seems to be from around October 2003. That's when the last item seems to have been added (Ben's iconic "Chopper hoverboard" . Anyways, it got me thinking.. this stuff is all like 5 years old! So I figured a trip to the ACTUAL Waterhead infohub was in order. Upon arrival there, you can perhaps imagine my shock to find that MY infohub was just as "up-to-date as the "real" one. I know that a lot of us pass around the Linden swag, but where do "Voting Stations" COME FROM? Is there a place, or places, where I can go to bring my collection of Linden swag up-to-code? Where can we go to get the latest, the greatest, and the all-but-forgotten freebies that represent the starting point upon which so much in SL is based?

I was wondering about this, or I should say something like this, a couple of days ago ... is there a "rares" market in SL at all? Any items from antiquity that simply cannot be made or garnered today?

Sadly, that stuff is about as current as it gets, aside form the Atoll items in your inventory (from 2005). I'd love to see more updated freebies released, taking advantage of new features an stuff. I'm sure it would cause an outcry about which items could be used to grief, an how its taking away from time fixing other stuff. Mari

There IS traffic in "rares". Starax creations come immediately to mind. I don't know that any Linden freebies qualify though.
Free Linden content has needed updating since forever. This is one reason why mentors and other helpers collect freebies...to make up for the poor content that new avatars are issued by Our Masters.

"Before dwell there were the Linden-created objects known as voting stations (sometimes also referred to as "voting booths", "voting boxes" and "vote boxes" . The voting station was used in a similar manner to dwell--a builder or property owner would put one out on their property and gain money nightly from the voting station depending on how many residents clicked it to "cast their vote" as a way of saying "nice job" on the build or property." Of course the system could be gamed however I feel it would have made bots a bit more useless for creating traffic.

When I first started I picked up a few free, no-copy "Linden Trading Cards" from little vendors around Ahern. They were nothing more than a prim with a Linden's name and picture on it. I'm sure I still have them, buried somewhere in a folder named Useless Junk or something. I only have 2 or 3 but I got the impression there was a whole set if you found all the vendors. Does anyone else have some of these?

There were (and their empty carcasses remain) also trading card vendors in other locations as well -- Waterhead, the island neat Mohrr and Kremer, the borrom of the crater in Hetereocera, and other places. Long since emptied.

I gave all my doubles from the trading cards (which were mostly the original ones, not the second round with mugs) to some dude who then complained they weren't the second round ones I was just being nice (I had thought) to a stranger who was asking for them. Enjah and I had "UN-Linden" trading cards in 2005 in a few kiosks - actually they were much better than the official ones Free, just for fun.

Way back at the beginning of 2006, LL announced a program of distributing freebies at Infohubs -- /52/c0/76909/1.html and /3/85/80781/1.html . They solicited contributions from residents, and the intent was to refresh the content every month. There were some freebie vendors set up, but the whole thing quickly fizzled. I don't remember whether they ever even put out a second month's batch of content. I thought it was a good idea; a way to get stuff out into the world, and a way to encourage people to visit the Infohubs. I don't know why LL didn't follow through.

It might have fallen in the same way many things do. The particular Linden who was behind the project might have left LL, leaving no one to fill the gap. Mari
