This may not be an answerable question... Or it may be. I don't know. Here's the problem;
I recently purchased a laptop, and everytime I connect to Second Life it literally kills my router - it causes it to stop functioning. Now, at the time I was running several programs, such as skype, so I wasn't 100 percent sure it was second life, but after some tweaking and experimenting, I am now sure it is. At first I thought it was just the voice function - with the standard viewer using voice will make my router stop working. Now it's also the candidate viewer, period, with or without voice. Also when I clear my cache it causes my router to drop. I think it may be an issue with my specific internet connection, but in lieu of an easy way to test that theory, I thought I'd just post this anyway, see if anyone else has ever had this problem, and see if they know some solutions.
I am running Vista. I have wondered if that was the cause, because when I use my desktop with XP I never have this problem. The issue is my desktop is a load of garbage and I'd rather use my laptop because I can actually MOVE in Second Life with it.
Any help is appreciated, and if not, well, damn. I may have to quit for awhile.

Might have a little more luck in the technical support forum, but have you tried connecting to your router both wirelessly and plugging your ethernet port directly into the router, and see whether or not you still crash it. Just a thought.

Two things to try if you haven't already. First, most people with laptops tend to connect wirelessly...........if you are one of those, try hardwiring to your router. Second, reset your router and modem (unplug from the electical source for 3 to 5 mnutes then plug back in) and try SL. If that doesn't help then perhaps copy and paste your initial post to the technical issues section. A pretty knowledgable group read that forum and can offer more help.

I had this problem with my Netgear Router back when I first joined SL. I switched to a cheapie Memorex one, and haven't had problems since. Seems it was either a bad router, or SL and the router didn't get along. Not really sure why.

What kind of router? I had to replace my Dlink DI-624 before I could connect reliably. Replaced it with a Linksys WRT-54.

This may be due to the recent patches that went out from MS and screwed up a lot of firewalls.
Go into your router and temporarily disable the firewall (if it is set), and see if that cures the problem.

Front No don't do this! The router firewall is your first line of defense for your internal network. The issue with the MS patch affected the ZoneAlram firewalls and only if the protection was set at high. ZA has issued a fix for this. This is a software firewall that runs on Windows and not your router.

(First of all, I'm not sure I know how. Second, my Resident Geek would kill me.)

Wireless connection and SL do not play very nicely recently. It has gotten worse and worse in the last year or so.
Try connecting to our router with ethernet cable instead, I bet the problem will go away...
