Ok, so I am getting ready to reformat my computer and I need to know if there is any SL data I need to back up. Are all my objects and settings stored on a server, or are they on my harddrive somewhere?

All on LL's servers.
Just redownload the viewer and you will have it all back once it loads. _____________________

Most of the rest of your data alas won't be. I hope you've got the media to reinstall your OS!

Your settings no, they will be wiped, but that's not really such a big deal. Everything inworld is always there, and is held in a server, I think in Texas, oddly.

Unless you want to keep any important chat logs. Those are on your hard drive.

It's not the location that I find odd, its the fact that the grid is split up all over the country. You can teleport some 5000 miles, well not literally, but electrically I suppose you are.

What I think is funny is that at times my wife and I may be sending IMs back and forth, sitting 10 feet apart in Reality, and it strikes me as funny to think of how far the data must travel all the way to San Francisco (or maybe Texas, or both) and back again. The only things on your local hard drive will be your chat logs, if you keep them. Look in your preferences, under the Communication tab, to see where they are saved. From memory the default is in a hidden folder in something like Users/[YourName]/AppData/Roaming/SecondLife/ or something like that, unless you specified a different directory folder for them. You may have to enable viewing of hidden files and folders to find them, if you're on a Windows computer, as AppData is a hidden folder.
If you have more than one avatar, each one will have their own folder within that final SecondLife folder, containing its own chat logs, etc. That's also where you'll find the .bmp images that show your last location and your home location screens (the ones that show while you're logging in to either location). |
