Hi,
The TOS do state that it is possible to transfer an account, if LL give permission [You may not transfer your Account to any third party without the prior written consent of Linden Lab; ].
I was wondering if anyone in the forums knew of a successful case of this happening, and if the approval was easily forthcoming or if a detailed process was involved, or if anyone has tried and was refused (any reasons given?).
A friend of mine wishes to sell his account, which is/was a thriving security business in SL (he is/was a private eye), as he is quite ill now in RL, and hasn't been able to get online for a month now, and is unlikely to be able to in the near future.
Most of his gadgets are copy/no-trans, which he commissioned as custom jobs, and are the envy of many in the security field in SL, as there are no commercially available products that do what his can do.
All info gratefully received

Have him put in a Support ticket with the particulars, but don't expect too much. LL will generally not transfer accounts unless the person is deceased and has willed it to another party. From: someone 2.4 Account registrations are limited per unique person. Transfers of accounts are generally not permitted. From: someone Linden Lab will not unreasonably withhold consent to the transfer of an Account in good standing by operation of valid written will to a single natural person, provided that proper notice and documentation are delivered as requested by Linden Lab.

In this case they would probably refuse. How can they possibly know your telling the truth? However, if your friend truly won't ever get back on line, there is another solution which I can't possibly suggest, but sure it happens.
The only time an account like this could be transferred would sadly be on a persons death and for financial reasons. You would very likely have to be a member of their RL family or that you could provide documentation that the request was made to you in a will. Of course you would have to provide documentation that the person was actually dead too.
I would assume this rarely happens as the cost for doing this probably outweighs any benefit of gaining the account and it does seem somewhat inappropriate.

I think the reason for allowing a transfer by will is purely legal. If that is the case I could foresee other legal instances where LL would accept a transfer to comply with legal requirements, such as:
a) The probated will of an ex-resident
b) Where, due to the incapacity of a resident, a power of attorney or a grant of guardianship is granted to someone
c) Where due to the insolvency of a resident, administrators are appointed by a court.
There are probably others.
I am looking for any examples where it HAS been granted (my friend is hoping for (b) above).

b, is a likely scenario to allow this, I would think.

From: Front Dawes A friend of mine wishes to sell his account, which is/was a thriving security business in SL (he is/was a private eye ) Are you sure he actually made money as a private eye in SL ? Its not one of the things in SL known to make serious money (or even be anything above the level of a griefer) Security businesses that are known to make money are scripters who make and sell the security systems that people put on their land or carry with them.

Best way to track an avi, is to friend them with an alt. Could see a business for that. Weird, but I could see it along with trackers and spies.

Front I have heard of it being done in the event of a RL death - not even needing to be in a Will. I could envision B, but only if the Power of Attorney or Guardianship actually happened. In other words, a Death certificate or some other type of Court/Legal document.

Yes, I believe he did make a lot of money in SL, and although no RL legal action as yet come out of his evidence gathering, a couple of threats of legal of legal action has resulted in out-of-court settlements for his clients (so he tells me).
There are many techniques for tracking the movements of an avatar in SL that can pinpoint every place they teelport to and visit, who they meet with, detect all their alts (yes, even this can be done), and all their landholdings/rentals, and much more besides.
Many of the techniques used in RL, especially the psychological elements, can be applied in SL too.

Front If what you say is true, and I doubt it is, he has to be using a hacked client and I hope LL deletes his account.

To the best of my knowledge, this cannot be done within TOS and might even constitute a RL Online Stalking charge.
