I realize that setting the "busy" or "away" status would automatically send a custom-made message whenever someone IMs, but they also reject all inventory offers and other neat things, as well as have that ugly "away" tag. Is there any way to send an automatic response to anyone who IMs, but without rejecting inventory/having the tag? Sometimes I'm afk for a while, and don't want people to think I'm ignoring them, but I'd welcome any inventory offers from announcements and such and get them when I'm available. Thanks.

With all your issues about "away" why don't you do as I do? If I know (or think) I might away from my computer for more than just a couple minutes (potty break, get a drink of water, call my dogs in, etc) I log off. If I happen to get distracted durring one of my "quickie" trips AFK and don't come back until maybe a half hour or so later then I just read my IM's, respond (perhaps apologizing for being away longer than I expected). No one's going to think your rude...........they sure don't think that of me. And to tell you the truth, when I IM someone and get the "away message" my first thought is why don't they just log off? Well, I know a couple builders that put up the "away" while they build but they are a freaky mess anyway.............LOL. Really, getting an "away message" is just as rude and not responding for a few minutes in my opinion.

Yes they will, even if you like, as soon as they start typing. Tested it with a few people, it works perfectly

Yes it is a trigger. Text comes in, script fires and text goes out over the net, regardless of viewer that sent it.
(Pointing out that Benski posted while I was typing)
