Is this just me?

When I drop items and pick them up I lose rights? I dropped my AO and went to mod it but I no longer had mod rights. When I dropped a shoe and picked it up I no longer had copy rights. Is this just me or is other people getting this to?

I don't know why this would be, but why are you dropping things to begin with? I NEVER drop anything that I own. If I want to stop wearing it, I detach it. I might as well not have a Drop command on my pie menu. I've never deliberately used it, and the last time I used it accidentally was 2 days after I started SL.

No, it's not just you, and you're probably not actually losing rights.

This is related to something called "permissions baking", and it's kinda confusing.

Rather than going into all the details, just rest assured that your item, while it may now appear "no mod", is actually still modifiable. It merely contains something that's no-mod, most likely the animations but also possibly scripts.

You might say "Well, it contained that stuff before, but didn't say no-mod." And you'd be right, but for reasons you'd probably not want to bother reading through.

If you rez your AO on the ground, you'll see that you can still modify it, adding or deleting contents, editing the prims, resizing it, or renaming it (even though you can't rename it in your inventory any more).

This kind of thing can also happen with copy or xfer privileges, in which case you actually CAN lose that priviledge. If that happens, it usually means that the person who created the object goofed -- because something they meant to be no-copy or no-xfer is actually copy/xfer, and people can pass it out, as long as they don't rez it first. Oops, their bad. I've made this mistake myself once or twice (esp before I understood the rule: ALWAYS SET PERMISSIONS INWORLD, not in inventory, when preparing products for sale.)

I wonder if anyone's actually found a useful purpose for the "drop" pie menu.

I often find things in my shop that people have obviously dropped, and I clean up after them (ick -- the things people drop in my particular shop. Thank goodness for latex gloves.)

I once had a skybox I shared with my gf. I noticed that I kept seeing floating text in the floor. I'd track the nearly invisible little object buried in my floor prim and delete it. But another would appear. As it turns out, my gf had a HUD that she'd "drop" to take off. Ack!

That option needs to at least be buried several levels in the pie menu!.

i have some things that were group owned. after the update last week . they all went to no perms so cant mod /copy/ trans / share with group nothing. ! until the actual one that owned them, comes and resets them, and that person wont be back for 3 months. lol.. so were all screwed up to use these items .

I sometimes work at high altitudes in the Preview Grid, just floating there. The trouble is that an object will be returned within 15 minutes if I am not actually sitting on it. Since I can't rez a new copy in mid-air, I wear it instead and then drop it. So I guess it is handy although that's the only instance where I have used it.


I agree, it's the kind of thing we should really have to go out of our way to do.

15 min? Must depend on where you are while working... I have rezzed stuff, been idle an hour, worked on it, logged off, come back the next day and oops, there it still is, I forgot to de-rez...

if the are group owned rather then set to a group then you are screwed even when that person gets back, the problem is that when you deed to group you are nolonger owning it, this can be troublesome when you deed something that has next permision set to no transfer because there is no way to sell it back or return it to the last owner, returning a group owned object that is no transfer will delete it without any way to retrieve it. unless this has been fixed and the warning in the return dialog has not been updated yet.

I could well be confused here: I was talking about Aditi. Are the Preview Grid and Beta Grid not the same thing?

Aha, a use for "drop"! No doubt that was the intended purpose all along.

Permissions have been breaking a LOT, for a lot of different reasons, since the new viewer was released. It's a definite issue.

I use drop when something I've bought turns out to be boxed. Surprise! Box on hand instead of hat on head = Drop.

geezz.......! this is like 2006 when they had all the trouble with everything lol...rezzing, perms , sim crossings etc..... i think there scamming us by adding sims to servers and they cant take it or reducing existing servers so things like your data get mucked up. i have always supported the lindens and have never really had to many probs till the last few months. i bought a new island and it worked great. till they did a rolling update for the last viewer, then poof ! now its like a class 3. and itss not that i have overloaded it with scripts etc..... so you pay for that then you lose your inventory stuff. or group stuff....im starting to think ....... is it really worth it to spend all this money.. just to lose it with missing things crappy performance where more and more you lose things due to this bug or that bug. you would think it would be better by now..... Unfortunate that you can't "open" an attachment, though, or "copy to inventory" doesn't appear in the build/edit panel.

Maybe you dont deserve to have them.
