Who is using CamSpace?

I had not heard of this until this morning. I did a search on the SL forums and didn't find anything so I thought I would ask.

CamSpace is software that you use in conjunction with a webcam. It allows you to turn any random object into a game controller and it also recognizes gestures.

I know LL was working on something similar a while back but CamSpace seems to be leading the race. The potential for this technology is great! I can imagine so many new approaches to gaming and interacting with Second Life. It just looks fun!

I'm probably the last person on earth to not have a webcam so I can't try this out, but maybe some of you have/will?

Here's a link to CamSpace, the software is a free DL.

And here's a video of it being used with various games.

I'm curious about that too...I saw a demo video of somebody testing it w/ SL last year.

Wow- wonder how that would interface with stuff in SL... Building- Dancing- SL could become an aerobic sport!

I don't need to state the obvious implications for the sex industry, do I? *grins*

Yep.. Mitch Kapor was (still is?) playing with that stuff (edit: http://www.handsfree3d.com/). I thought that required a special webcam, though. The results were similar but I think they did the processing in hardware and it looks like this CamSpace stuff is done in software.

This could have some interesting apllications with disabled folks. I know there's a number of projects like that going on in SL...

/me also says 'mocap' before anybody else gets to it.

Ah yea Mitch Kapor was the one. I remember his video showing off the concept.

So I guess nobody has tried it yet, at least on the forums. I think I'll have to order a cam and give it a shot myself. I'm sure interfacing with SL via CamSpace is terribly clunky, but it just looks so interesting to me.

I think response time may be a problem. This stuff looks like it's done in software and SL is pretty notorious for eating all the CPU cycles it can. The lag between when you twitch and when SL gets sent the "Angel twitched!" message may be annoying..

Let us know how it goes!

I looked at the video. No doubt it's a clever development but I don't see how what they were doing was any better than playing table tennis with bat, pingpong ball and a good old-fashioned table with a net.

Conifer I think I said something similar when I saw Kapor's demo way back when. With the ambition of Nintendo and what they accomplished with the Wii I guess my imagination is more open to concepts like this. Also I guess the idea of virtual world interface never rising above the mouse and keyboard is somewhat depressing to me.

I gave it a try - was on their beta program but to be honest it did not work very well for me.
There were significant problems in getting it to detect the controllers correctly.
When it did work I have to admit that it felt strange, slow to move and awkward - certainly not as I imagined it would be.
That was some time ago though as I pulled out of the beta program and it might be much better now.

I've tried the software. It requires a pretty good camera image to work well, and a bightly lit room.

Fact is though. It traces 2d translations and rotations. These could be well translated for maybe a racing game steering wheel (like most examples), or some ping pong game. But i'm not sure how they could be used in a full 3d environment area as SL, where you need 3d motions. So it's NOT a 3d mouse/solution.

But any suggestions are welcome. Maybe that would spark my interest to build the necessary control logic for SL. ;)
