In the void (the ocean you can't fly to) are they ever going to open it up so that u can fly anywhere in SL? (and finally solve the is the SL world flat, round, cube or hexaganle mystery)
flying into an invisable wall seems really unrealistic

Why would they? It would mean they'd have to maintain servers for every single one of those void regions. I seriously doubt that's going to happen any time soon.

I hope I dont fall into the void..then I too would cease to exsist

Those voids have no coordinates (example: 123.456.789) they dont exsist, thus the need to TP to a XYZ coordinate that does...

Me thinks me will go off and wander around making gibberish noises like a baboon...I hope I dont fall into the void..then I too would cease to exsist

Good point, they seem to have enough trouble with the ones they got goin already :(

Would be kinda fun though, new way to explore...and bouncin off those invisible walls is not as much fun as ban-lines...at least the ban-lines you can use like a trampoline :)

It would be interesting to kind of get lost in the middle of the ocean, or just go wandering to see what Island you end up on...but I agree, they wont ever host that many servers for void space unless they tossed a bunch of them onto one with limited capacity (say, 5-10 people passing through). I suppose they could do that, make large areas one body of water to be hosted on a lesser type of server.

I think it would be good if there were at least a few more open water sims around the edge of the maps at least. I know there are a lot more like that on the newest continent, isnt there? Ones that didnt get sold to end up with floating houses and ban lines on them? I've never actually gone sailing and havent flown around much lately. Large ads and being bounced around properties isnt fun lol. So I DO think they could do with more water open sims for people that arent sold.

"Yeppers! But that would also depend on who you are with!"

Hehe true, finding that right someone to get stranded on an island with is key! :)

It's bad enough you have these people flying into where they don't belong and/or are not wanted without giving them more liberty to expand these intrusions.

Who cares if sl has a round shape, a flat shape or a mis-shape. If you need to spend time trying to figure this "mystery" out then you definitely need to get out more.

The void 'ocean' regions in between the defined and existing regions do seem to be 'placeholders' in the absolute coordinate system of SL.

At least in the area near the island where I live.

If you jump over one of the void regions and into the next region on the other side, your absolute coordinate (in that direction) will have changed by 256 (assuming you maintain the same relative position within the regions of course).

So even if the void regions do not exist and of course do not occupy any server space (as others have pointed out too), maybe travel in the void could be 'faked' by letting the client display a generic empty void region with no objects.

Only when entering into an existing region again would the avatar actually be moved into that region.

It may of course need some more refinement to function.

Actually part of this functionallity is already there.

The (unconstrained) camara can be moved thru the void regions and while there will display nothing but 'void' (or you own region where your avatar is located if you look back at that).

But the interesting point is that the absolute coordinates of the camera are updated and maintained while traveling thru the void regions.

You can check that by selecting the "Client" menu | "HUD Info" | "Camera".

This will bring up a display of the camera coordinates ("CameraCenter";) which will show you how the absolute coordinates of the camera are updated when traveling thru the void areas.

The biggest block, I think, isn't the technology or the cost, but the fact that some folks are just nuts over security and privacy of their own spaces.

I'd LOVE for people to be able to fly or sail to Caledon; we've just linked up borders with another micronation (Winterfell) to enhance the overall experience - more in the works - but wide open sailing and skies would even be better.

I'd LOVE to see a way for the privacy people to get what they want (re-camming in also) but have a means for the rest of us to link up.

I agree. I think the privacy fanatics have what they want. They should be able to keep what exists of the ugly hodgepodge called mainland (with some great exceptions). In the future I'd like LL to open new mainland with areas that offer zoning and no banlines, etc. That way everyone gets what they wants.

Never say never (ok, I know you didn't), but almost all the large inland lakes you see on the map, were once void sims. When LL upgraded some regions to newer severs, they used the old ones to make the void sims come alive, so to speak.

I know I was pickeld tink when all of a sudden I had like 18 water sims at my doorstep. :D

We do need a lot more open ocean sims. Sailing, or indeed any kind of long distance travel, is almost impossible, due to obstructions and banlines.

Case in point: The wonderful new connection between Nautilus and the new northern continent was quickly blocked by someone who bought up key pieces of property and only allowed members of the owning group to pass.

Yeah - how awful would it be to allow people to fly and sail on Linden water that you don't own or have any right to restrict movement across. OMG!! People enjoying themselves somewhere far away from your precious land!! LOL - you take the cake, bro. You don't want anyone within 2 sims of your land in any direction, so opening up ocean sims to allow people to go somewhere else and enjoy themselves is a bad idea? Grinch. Where did you put the Christmas presents you stole from the little kids in Whoville?

OK, seriously, now that I'm done laughing and pointing. This would be a great idea. Just open up some sims connecting the mainland continents and keep them open for recreation - sailing, flying, etc. Restrict building so they don't become griefer hangouts, but people can still fly or sail in and out of them. Let people who want to explore go explore the ocean so they don't tick off people like Ricardo who wants to make sure that people stay off his land. Maybe sponsor some sailboat races or something - the SL Cup.

Remember when SL was fun? When it was this new world of wonder and possibilities? When people actually enjoyed each other's company and admired the creativity of those around them? It's like that every day for me.

I think it's like that every day for most of us. I think it's the extremist on both ends of the spectrum that are spoiling it for all of us. Batten down the hatches! Someone will view my pixels!

Just like in RL, ignore them.

On a lighter note, I swear, it seems like every day I log on and say, "WHAT? There's a script in that thing that does that? So you can... REALLY? I'll be damned. I thought I'd seen everything!" Either that, or I find something that makes me laugh until I'm in physical pain or makes me feel like a seven year old in a toy store or...or...or...

The last time I was on, I got into an IM with someone and actually had to go get a box of Kleenex because I was laughing so hard I was crying. Nothing in RL makes me laugh like that.

SL and the people in it ROCK.

Hey, we could have a pirate ships and board other ships that venture into the sea... yeah.. sea battles and making people walk the plank, damsels to kidnap for ransom and pirate wenches for fun... now where is the rum?

I can see it now, a pirate ship crashing a regatta.. Jolly Roger flying high and smoking cannon to port and starboard.

Now, THAT would be fun...
