A while ago, I recieved a chain warning that a certain SL resident was going from sim to sim, dropping a scripted prim that could steal the contents of peoples inventory's.
This seems very unlikely to me, and the person who was accused has im'd her to protest her innocence.
Does anyone else have any more information on this, or any idea if such a thing as an inventory stealer could even exist?
Thanks in advance.

From: Eduard Korhonen such a thing as an inventory stealer could even exist? Prims simply don't have a way to do that. There aren't even any script functions to look at an avatar's inventory, never mind take stuff.

No, it couldn't exist. Quite simply, there is no way that is possible to do with LSL. The story was complete nonsense.

Thank you. Thought this was the case, but didn't want to go unbanning the accused until I had checked with people who know better

I have, at times, been known to use the line:
llStealSoul( llDetectedKey(0) ) and ransom it for 300L. I believe it is a deprecated function that not many people know about.

Just remember not to use it near a Linden, more specifically, those in charge. For some reason, when that is used on an already soulless creature, it crashes the sim and the corrupts the inventories of all avatars that were connected to said sim.

Not possible with scripting in-world of an object to directly affect someone's inventory. Can't be done, unless it exploits a bug where it attempts to give you inventory in such a way that it corrupts the SL database or client. So we'd need more information to be able to tell if this is a hoax or a real possibility.

If it's identifying someone by name along with the message to "tell everyone you know and every group you're in!!" then chances probably are good that it's a hoax (and/or a defamation campagin) though.

As I recall, the original message that went round not only named the supposed perpetrator but also explained this exploit didn't work across ban lines, so the recommended course of action was to ban the named avatar. On a different note, I thought Siggy Romulus' comment on this over the road was a classic, and I am sure he won't mind my sharing it here: From: someone "Just letting you know Siggy Romulus is dropping a prim called 'COUNTRY MUSIC SONG' randomly around Second Life, DON'T TOUCH IT! It's scripted to make you lose your job, your wife run off with your best friend, and your dog get hit by a pickup truck....'

Yeah but play it backwards and the dog doesn't die, the wife comes back, and you get offered your job back.

Attach an invisible megaprim to your avatar and position it to be just above the ground. When people try to rez things, they "give" it to you instead. That's the "inventory stealing prim" that comes to mind.

From: Vance Adder I thought it played Black Sabbath. No, that is one of those evil Beatles albums.
