I want to attach an object. But it always isn't at the right position. How to make sure that anyone who gets it can attach it at the right position?

I would say to use the Attach Object location(drop menu) closest to where you want it to be. Then EDIT your object and move it to where you really want it to be. Of course using a posing stand to make sure of the correct spot. I have found that sometimes I have to use a alternate Attach Object location if it will conflict with some other object, like a bracelet and a prim sleeve attachment. I've noticed that some necklaces use chest and others haven't, I just figured those that didn't use chest. moved it with Editing Position arrows to the neck area.

What decides the position of the object when next owner wears or attaches it? The position of root prim, the script, or... ?

It will automatically attach to the last attachment point, no matter who is using it. So if I had it on my right hand before I gave it to you, it would attach there for you too.

when you create multiple prim objects, it is the root prim (the one in yellow when you are in edit mode, the last one selected when it is linked) that is the prim that is used for attachment info, name of the object, etc
when you attach something for the first time (say you created hair, you would attach it to the skull) you may have to adjust the position of the object. The best way to do this, is to stand on a posing stand (available almost everywhere) and edit the object and position it on your avatar. Once you have positioned it, you will have to detach it then reattach it to save the position and attachment info then when you either give it to someone, or sell it, the new owner simply just has to wear it, and the position will be the same as you had it when you were finished adjusting it. Now, for things like hair, skirts, etc, it is always a good idea to make them modify, because we do not all have the same size, and shapes, so therefor the other person can adjust it to fit them as well sorry for the lengthy description, hope it helps _____________________

the trick with a prim skirt, is to put a sphere in the center, that will be buried inside the body, sure helps for adjusting it hehe
(and of course texture it totally clear so it is not seen poking out anywhere) _____________________

I'm usually battling with it being too large around the waste and yet not allowing my a$$ to hang out the back ![]() _____________________

ah that problem LOL
the sphere just helps me with rotation and such. as for the butt hanging out in the back, maybe adjust individual prims rotate a little I think most good skirts blend with the clothing to camouflage that problem _____________________

Also why can't there be a standard about where skirts attach to? Some go for stomach, some for spine and some for pelvis - plays havok with using my horse - or with weapons scabbards/holsters. _____________________

What decides the position of the object when next owner wears or attaches it? The position of root prim, the script, or... ? As everyone mentioned, the last position it was on when you detached it. Having said that, the item may or may not appear correctly on another AV due to the unlimited variety of AV size and shape. Example: a ring fit fine on the hand of the AV I made it on, however, when the same ring was given to another AV, it was lost in the hand altogether - took 5 minutes and a posing stand before it was properly placed on that hand. So, if it's a small item, or a "tight fit", perhaps a little leeway should be built into it before it's offered up for sale, so it's not lost somewhere within the customer. _____________________
Nimbus rated!!
So your final Nimbus Score is a grand total of 8.55. A magnificent achievement! |

saving attach points
03-02-2009 16:18
OK here's a followup question...
I have an object that I want to switch between hands. (i.e. right hand to carry and left hand to use). Is there any way to "save" attachment location/position information so that I can correctly attach the object when I go to start the animation related to it? If I attach & adjust it to both hands before I "give" it will both positions be remembered? |

No. What you do is this: You have the object in your right hand and the duplicate also in the left but invisible. When you activate the gesture or click a hud or say your /command (whatever activates it) the item in your right hand goes invisible and the item in your left hand becomes visible - or vice versa, etc. A lot of scripted melee items work this way. And as katheryne said, it does require scripting. But not that bad if its simply a hide/show on the click of object attached as a hud... But hey, im a lunatic who can't add 1+1 so who knows ![]() _____________________

Some go for stomach, some for spine and some for pelvis - plays havok with using my horse - or with weapons scabbards/holsters. When I include a belt buckle in an outfit it I position it out in front of the stomach so that it doesn't end up invisible inside anyone. Everyone has to adjust it to the right place on themselves. I so wish we clothes designers had better meshes to work with... _____________________
