I've visited a lot of skin stores and I would have to say there are ZERO stores selling just makeup. To do that the seller would have to make their skin modifiable and sell the actual texture of head. So basically it would double the amount of inventory they would have to deal with as they would have to package a 'body skin' and a 'head texture'. Not to mention that it would make it easier to steal that head texture.
Short answer: No. _____________________

nope, you can't
due to the fact that the makeup would have to be put on the "tattoo layer" where skin makers put the skin textures. some places MIGHT make skin that is mod and IF the skin is semi transparent, then the slides can make SOME changes most places when selling skins sell it with different makeup options _____________________

Pixel Deep used to sell her skins this way actually. I haven't been there in quite awhile, so I suppose that may have chnaged. Once you have the skin she has matching make-ups that you can buy. She supplies instructions with the make-ups so that you pretty easily replace the old face with the new one, save under a new name and have your new skin.
I'll have to go inworld and see if this is still how she sells them. **edit: I am in the store and she still has the make-ups. Looks like the skins (which include 4 make-up options in the set) are just under 1400L$ and the additional make-up packs are L$275.** _____________________

The skin creators dont' do it not just because of inventory and layer issues but also because it would cut into the bottom line for the massively overpriced skins that they're selling, why have you pay 2000 for a skin then a little more for extra makeup sets when they can have you pay 2000 for the skin, then 2000 for the same skin with different makeup again. The skin designers do put the most work into their product of pretty much anyone in SL but at the same time they're the greediest people you'll ever see. Pretty much anyone who knows the racket and isn't a skin designer will tell you that skins are ridiculously expensive and for the most part new designers (the few there are) are happy to maintain the status quo.

With only 3 posts My guess is you are somebody's alt (probably one of the content creators'). If you want to challenge me at least do it face to face with your main account. I'm not here to challenge my work but I'll say this the signs it was a huge amount of scripting work to get them done. To my knowledge only a couple of other people that I know of make these and at least one doesn't sell his but just puts them in his club for his guests to enjoy which is admirable but he is the creator of a popular multi-gadget so his expenses are covered, most creators don't have the luxury of being set for SL life from a single product. Back on topic, I'm not saying that skin creators don't deserve to get paid well for their work nor will I dispute that it takes weeks if not months to make a good skin however it's still my opinion that skins are overpriced even vs the amount of time and energy needed to create one. _____________________

Considering that many people may buy only one or two skins in the lifetime of their avatar, I don't think quality skins are over priced. I have 8 skins and probably a hundred outfits. See the discrepancy there? Once I find an amazing skin, I stick with it for months and months, whereas I might change clothes every time I login. How else can the skinners make money?

I think dismissing the entire skin industry as greedy is really overstating things.
For example, SL skins received a shot in the arm recently when Eloh Eliot (Another Skin) released her full-perm very nicely painted skins (male and female) under an open source (BSD) license. The skins themselves can be gotten for free. Creators who go to her blog can actually get the photoshop files for the quite nice skins, and alert consumers have seen modified versions of them popping up all over the place ... these are the basis for the skins you are seeing appearing here and there at clothes shops, for example. She has spawned a group of derivative designers who post pictures of their creations here: http://www.flickr.com/groups/anotherskinmodclub/ There will always be a place for the unique and amazing skins produced by premier creaators such as those at The Abyss, Celestial Studios, Second Skin Labs, etc.. I don't begrudge them their prices at all. Eliot's generous gift to SL has just ... raised the bar a bit ![]() |

Considering most sucessful Skin creators get ripped off and second rate copies are either sold or distributed as freebies,
I'd say the fact they have to charge a premium price shouldnt be the least bit surprizing. |

Using the sliders to modify makeup in a Mod skin is NOT the same thing as an actual artistically rendered change in makeup. I'm kinda glad most skins aren't mod. Wed end up with a lot of Tammy Fae Baker looking people - who's friends all tell them they look "hawt" |
