Mute gets rid of the text created by the object when it "chats" at you, not the sound. To get rid of the sound, if you own the parcel you are on, go into about land>media>restrict spacialized sound*. All sounds outside your parcel will be muted. *May not be the exact wording, but it's something like that.

No, I'm saying if you own YOUR land, you can do what I suggested and mute your neighbor. The other option is to go into preferences and turn down the volume slider that affects the the animals.

Another option:
If you mute the OWNER of an object, then you will stop hearing noise from all their objects. For some reason, muting the object itself does not have the same effect.
If you might want to receive messages from the person, politely let them know you are muting them and why, and tell them to use an alt or a friend to contact you if necessary.

actually its a problem that from memory has been fixed in the new viewer, what you want to do is find out which prim in the object is making the sound and actually mute that prim, that will stop the noise. found out the hard way with an annoying x-mas tree a neighbor of a parcel i was working on had

-Crunch I believe this is true. The sound of running water annoys me terribly, so I often mute fountains. Usually I have to find the rock, water spout, or trickling stream prim coming from the fountain which contains the repeat, sound script and the sound itself. (and mute this prim individually by selecting edit linked parts)

I learn something new every fourth day on this forum. Thanks for amending my wrong answer.
