Ok, so you know how there is all these random group invites? I usually read my blue boxes on login and try to accept things from friends and to decline all the group invites. But sometimes I miss. Well today, before I logged in, I see on my email:
XXX has invited you to join a group. To join this group, you will have to pay a signup fee of L$7782. Group: XXX
A fee of 7782? Sure ppl can charge anything they like to join a group, but then to spam it? I never heard of this person and the group name suggests in the lines of Click to enter, so its obviously just for milking.
The good thing here its set so high, that newbies and a lot of us older, wouldn’t have enough funds to join (like me), but some do (I sometimes do), and are used to 10+ blue boxes on log in.
More than anything, I think this is a flaw from LLs side; there should be a say yellow box, for groups that charge. However, if (s)he has sent out say 200-1000 invites, i am sure that at least 1% clicks yes and has the money. So its kind of the perfect scam. As far as i can tell from the group charter, this group is just to pay the entrance fee. So its actually kind of honest about its intentions. However, it does reveal some flaws a from LLs side (that charged groups aren’t differently marked than free groups, you can always leave a free one).
Luckily, this time i not only spotted it, but I also wouldn’t had the money, so would have spotted it then. However, I think it’s quite despicable, and its only made to rip people of, so can I AR?

Well it won't hurt to AR that.. LL should at least be made aware of it.. Though I would imagine that the 1% that clicked yes and had 7k stolen from them have already AR'd this bandit.

You can AR any group invite as spam as long as you didn't request the invite (be it asking a resident or clicking a prim for a bot invite).
It generally pays to IM the group owner (in case that wasn't the inviter) and let them know someone is spamming group invites. If they're the one doing it under an alt they'll generally admit to it (directly or indirectly) and you can AR them rather than the anonymous throw-away alt/bot.

You CAN. I probably would. But I also think that LL will not take action on this. It's despicable, but it doesn't seem to violate the TOS.

I think the group owner probably chose that amount because a number full of zeros would have automatically set off alarms. I'd bet he's hoping people won't notice. Probably not ARable. I'm not certain. I'd mute him, though. edit: OK, wrong about being ARable. Just not worthwhile, though.

From: Eva Tiramisu Is it AR-able? anything/everything is ARable if the person filing finds it broadly offensive, or can link it in any way to any of the other TOS violations.

Thanks for the answers. I have ARed and also created a jira to try to sway LL to change the look of the pop-up http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/MISC-1417

That Group invite is so absurd and wrg on so many levels. Thanks for drawing attention to it and reminding us to pay attention! If I had my druthers, I'd belong to like maybe 8 Groups, I like the subscribe0matic w/e it's called method.
*side question* If you are grouped out, reached your max on Group slots and hit accept on that, would it still take your monies?
