There are a number of different places you can start Second Life at.

When you go to secondlife.com/join you can select from a number of places.

I made a blog post from that page at http://suezannecbaskerville.wordpress.com/2008/03/03/second-life-community-entry-points-2/

The normal Linden Lab sponsored sim one enters at is called Orientation Island .

There used to be just one Orientation Island sim.

Now there are many numbered Orientation Islands.

The standard path for new users to follow is to go around on OI, as the Orientation Islands are called, for a few lessons on the very basics.

There they go to a Help Island, where they can hang around and learn a lot more if they want , or they can go on to the mainland if they want.

You can't go back to the Linden Lab Orientation Island you started at for 60 days, I think, since you can go there if you become a Second Life Mentor, and that requires a 60 day waiting period.

The is one public sim called Orientation Island Public that is patterned after an old model Orientation Island, like the one there was when there was only one Orientation Island for all of Second Life.

There are two public sims called Help Island Public which are like the current Help Islands.

Did orientation Island change?. Mine was a series of pathways and lagoons over a full sim with Aztec Ruins and a pyramid off in the distance. While in orientation an avatar appeared flying above me..i shouted hello but they never spoke..they flew off and poofed((i wish i had gotten a name :( ))

And OH how i wish i could go back to that Island. So many times Ive wanted to recapture the feeling I had that first day.

Check in your inventory for old landmarks, notecards, etc. Set it to sort by date so you can find the old ones. Might be something there.

If you click on a SLurl you get directed to a join Second Life page - will you go to the destination after you get registered?

Orientation Island Public looks familiar to older account holders but it's not the same atmosphere. OI Public is an infohub and crowded as heck a lot of the time, and is a magnet for those who enjoy trying to repulse and disgust new users at all the places LL provides for new users. One part of the old style OI experience was that it was usually fairly empty in the old days. Thus no lag, and no one to bug you, so you could fly around in peace and enjoy the scenery.

If you entered SL through the current style of OI, the one with castle and volcano and that annoying HUD, then you can relive your OI days in much the same atmosphere by becoming a mentor. There are enough of the new style OIs that they aren't filled to the max with noobs and volunteers.
