I have never had an interest in Facebook or My Space, but:

"Valleywag has video of Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg laying down the law. “You can’t be on Facebook without being yourself,” Sandberg says. “We kick you off.”"

WTF -- absolutely crazy.

So... "Ceera Murakami" is a legally-registered "Doing Business As" pseudonym for my Player, and I can prove my registration of that as a legal alternative name for me in my county's records. My Player recieves US mail made out to that name, and can cash checks made out to that name. Does that mean Ceera *could* have a facebook page, and they couldn't squalk? Not that you'd catch me dead on Facebook, but that is an amusing thought.

Well, I haven't used my Facebook account in a while, but it's under my avatar name (/me waits for ban). I try to keep my RL internet presence carefully controlled--it can impact things such as future job interviews and such, not to mention the possibility of generations yet to come making fun of my youthful endeavors.

Facebook covers the rent by providing information about its users to commercial interests. I suppose this is one data point they don't want to give up. As for me, it convinces me even more that I would never open an account under my real name with them.

*laughs* Ceera even gets offers for credit cards from the likes of American Express.... Business-class cards, which "obviously" my "Fox and Ground Construction Company" must need, for my company expenses...

( My SL business' name is also legally registered and maintained in RL. I can cash checks made out to "Fox and Ground Construction Company", too. )

WTF. I thought in the US you could use whatever name you like as long as it's not for the purposes of criminal activity.

You can, though for some legal applications, like cashing checks, or signing legal contracts, that pseudonym needs to be legally registered with a government authority.

But Facebook is a private business, and can refuse service to anyone, based on any criteria that they uniformly maintain. So if they say "No false identities or fake characters allowed", or "The images of yourself must be accurate photos of the real person owning that account", they are in their rights to do so. After all, it's mostly a site for people looking for dates. So having that sexy college girl from Savannah, GA turn out to be a sweaty male truck driver from New York is a bad mark on their marketing to their main demographic.

LOL i still think its crazy that they wanna do this but can also understand why. Methinks all the Lindens with accounts there will have to rethink as its not them in RL thats what struck me as funniest :)

Eep. I hope they don't find out I'm not really a lolcat, then.

I think FB will be busy with all the other fake names there other than SL names :)
