Weren't the height restrictions lifted with Havok4?

I thought I'd heard something about being able to build up to 4096m in the sky once Havok4 rolled out, but it appears that you can't rez any higher than 1024m, and if you attempt to edit anything over 768m it immediately snaps back down to 768.

I swear I heard (more than once) that we'd be able to build a fair amount higher than that.

I had never tried it myself, but this thread is where I first heard it was possible:

H4 lifted the ceiling, but you need a 1.20 RC to easily use it (as in the Editor). Scripts can do relevant stuff on H4 regions without that client. I think there are still limits to regular teleporting (which is probably just a bug), but scripted teleporters can go all the way up to 4096 now (with the right scripts, of course).

It works if you use the new Release candidate 1.20 or whatever. I've done it - rezzed a test platform at 3000metres and the rezzed, duplicated, and moved prims on it.

In the regular viewer I couldn't rez anything up there, although the platform was still there and I could still jetpack up to it and walk about on it.

Just noticed that most of my sims are server version 1.21.0.85745, but some of them, including sims that were in the H4 early adopter program, are at version Second Life Server 1.20.1.85162. Is that rolling restart still underway?

Yep. The region I was just in got the five minute warning and blinked off. Just came back at 1.21--I'm hoping with several hours of my work still intact.

My impression is that we're waiting for a new client. The SERVER allows prims to move up to 4096, which you can do via scripting. (I've tried it with a non-physical follower, and it did indeed go up very high indeed)

But the part where we "rez" things and "slide" them using the edit position tools.. that's hardcoded in the viewer, and for whatever reason, we have to wait for the next "full version of the client" to see that feature.

I know that my skybox is going up there, within minutes of being able to do it.

The release candidate allows for building above 768 meters. While still a bit buggy, I'm finding the current version 1.20.4 to be fairly stable and was on for several hours last night without crashing.

There currently is a problem that prevents you from logging in at your last location, if it was above 768 meters. However, you can set your home location there and logging into home, above 768 meters, works fine.

You can teleport using the map or landmarks but, I haven't found a teleporter system that supports the new build height yet.

Editing an object using a viewer version prior to 1.20 will cause that object to snap down to 768 meters.

A friend passed me a long distance teleporter for the new heights last night, which I haven't looked at yet since I'm using the Cool viewer with the old height limits still in it, but they are out there it seems...

Are prims more likely to drift at higher altitudes?

Though it's not really long enough to know for sure, I'm getting no 'extra' drift at 4000 meters vs 300. My workshop is at 4000 meters to keep it private, and everything is still as I originally made it the day 1.2 came out.

so, if you complete your build at ground level (realizing you will not be able to edit anything once you change it's height), you can alter the coordinates to 1024m and it will stay up there?

Yes, but you will need to use the 1.20 viewer to alter the Z coordinate above 768.

This seems to be the only reason for me to update my viewer. I will give it a shot. Thanks for the info.

Will people need 1.20 to actually GET to (and function at) 4000m, or is it just editing that's a problem?

It's just the editing, btw on the early adopter region that I had to test I could rez up to 4096 but offcourse not move it.

It is still limited. Logging in above 768 doesn't work yet (drops you down to old space), so it's not a good place to set as home etc. That part is supposed to be fixed with the 1.22 server.

Setting your home above 768 and logging in to your home location works just fine. It is only logging into your Last Location above 768 that is a problem. I have not tried logging into home with the 1.19 viewer but it works with 1.20.

Teleporting using landmarks or the map works with all viewers or offering teleport to a friend works as well.

It is really only editing that is currently limited to 1.20+ viewers.

EDIT: I just logged into my Home location at 3500 meters using 1.19.1.4 viewer. No problem at all.

It is the setting of home above 768 won't work with the released viewer, that gets clipped to the old ceiling. So it's not really useful for things like rentals.

OK, setting home above 768 works fine with the 1.20 RC but not the 1.19 viewers or below.

But, once home is set using 1.20, the other viewers have no problem logging into that home location.

Yes, not good for rentals. Without the build tools, the higher limits are not particularly useful for anyone not using the 1.20 viewer anyway.
