Gesture and Object in Inventory

I have an object in inventory, say a glass of wine. I would like to "wear" this object in my right hand using a "gesture" and also later remove it. I know that gestures have animations, sound, chat text and timing. Is there a way to "wear" something using a gesture?

Along the same lines is there something you can type into chat that does the same thing: "wear" and detach.

Thank you for your time.

Hmm...this should be possible. I mean, if you look at some peoples' typing animation, a laptop pops up while typing...probably the same thing.

Actually, no - sorry. Objects in inventory don't really "exist" in SL until they are worn or placed in world; no script can act on them. Gestures do have some special magic that allows them to use sounds and animations from one's inventory, but the list stops right there and doesn't include clothing or objects.

Michael, the way typing AO laptops and other attachments like that appear and disappear, is either 1) they are always there but a script toggles them between 100% alpha (invisible) and not, or 2) an already-worn attachment rezzes the new object, then tells it to delete itself.

A gesture cannot attach an item from your inventory to your avatar.

The laptop thingies Michael is referring to is something that is worn on an attachment point on your avatar that only shows itself when the typing animation is activated. But it would have to already be on one of your avatars attachment points.

Most likely what you'd have to do would be to script the wine glass to go invisible while actually wearing it much the same way you can make poseballs invisible.

IE: Gesture is set up so that the trigger would be "/drink" which would cause the animation of drinking from the glass to play while also make the wineglass visible in your hand the same way a poseball plays its animation while causing the ball to become invisible.

But you would have to be wearing the wineglass first, even if it were invisible.

Allow me to follow up on my question. Thank you all for your replies. Let's say I wear the wine glass all the time. I can set up a gesture to make it visible and, I assume a different one to make it invisible. I am new to this. What would be the script to make it visible and invisible or where would I look to find out how to write such a script?

Again thank you.

Catbriar hi! From the SL Forums above, there is a Scripting Tips and a Scripting Library under Content Creation that should help :)

Duh...of course I knew that. What was I thinking. I guess accidentally selecting my invisible keyboard 500 times isn't enough to remember...

Thanks for the reminder.

Well, I didn't know this so have learned something :)

In addition to the example above, I've seen a child avatar pull out a mobile phone about the size of herself to 'talk' and just a couple of days back, met someone who pulled out a book to write into even with scribbling noise when typing LOL

Thank you, Ava. I looked at the scripts involved and it will be a bit of a learning curve but fun like everything else here.

Yeah.. I actually have something similar with my Shunrai Rising Sun Katana... wear the blade but its invisible until I 'draw' it from the sheath, then it also enables some commands.
