I got this in my email today:

From: LL
Hello from Linden Lab,

As you may have seen on the Status Blog (http://status.secondlifegrid.net), the LindeX currency exchange experienced technical difficulties last night between 3am and 7am PST. One or more of your transactions was affected by these issues.
We are already working on fixing the affected transactions and depending on the details of your transaction, one of several things will happen:
1) If you purchased Linden Dollars, were charged, and did not receive your Lindens, your account will be credited the appropriate amount of L$.

2) If you purchased Linden Dollars, and were charged more than the market exchange rate, we will refund this amount to your credit card or PayPal account if you were overcharged more than $2 (USD).

3) If you purchased Linden Dollars, and were charged more than the market exchange rate, we will credit your account the appropriate amount of L$ if you were overcharged less than $2.

If you are receiving a L$ credit (issues #1 and #3), and would prefer a refund to your credit card or PayPal account, please submit a support ticket at http://secondlife.com/support. Please use Ticket Type "Billing and L$" and then Billing Type "Linden$" to ensure that your refund request is processed quickly

We apologize for the inconvenience, and appreciate your patience as we continue to correct these errors. We will process all credit card and PayPal refunds by 7pm (PST) today, but they may take a few days to be reflected by your bank. All Linden Dollar credits will be processed by 7pm (PST) tomorrow, December 16th.

Thank you,

Maurice Linden

When does a company get off on issuing refunds "only if the overcharge was $2 or more"?

An overcharge is an overcharge.

Possibly in the bit where they say they'll credit it to you in the form of L$, unless you'd prefer a US$ refeund to your credit card or PayPal account, in which case they'll do that.
