Hold shift while pressing enter, instead of just pressing enter like normal.

A million moons ago there used to be 3 options for chat: Whisper, Say and Shout. They removed Whisper as a chat option for other then scripting purposes, probably because if you want to whisper to someone you can just do it in an IM:

From: Knowledge Base
Whispered text only has a range of 5 meters. Whispered text can only be used by objects that are running Resident-created scripts; often times scripted vending machines will use whisper text, so as not to disturb other shoppers.

i think i know what the OP is asking for..the channels that nobody can hear but maybe your huds or other scripted items on certain channels other than general and shout..like channel 1 and the other channels you can't hear
/1 menu or /1 help..

It was in the release candidate viewer's chat options. I stopped using the RC so I'm not sure if it's still in there.

It is. I'm not sure of a keyboard shortcut for it yet, but you can choose it using the little arrow widget next to "say" in the Release Client.

Interesting that the KB is both wrong and out-of-date. The range of a whisper is 10m (per all the scripting wikis' llWhisper() docs). And as others have noted, in the new 1.22 viewer series, avatars can whisper, not just scripts.

Only if you find the typical interesting

Pardon then for the mis-information.

I wonder why they would bother to bring it back. What function could it serve for chatting that IM does not?

If you want to make a comment to a couple of AVs near you that you don't want to be heard by those a little further away, I guess whisper is easier than opening a conference IM?

OK my first reply to this thread is still correct. Shift-Enter whispers... got it?

If you are using a client that supports wispering, and that is the current RC.

All you people telling me I am wrong should just shush and go download a not out of date client.

whisper has been sooo handy since they brought it back for that very reason. It actualy comes up a lot more often then you think.

shift-enter used to be shout

it seems to be counterintuitive for shift to reduce rather than increase the range

Not originally. They took shift-enter out as shout when they did a bunch of changes to the way the chat bar worked... the one that had everyone jumping around because the chat bar kept losing focus. They didn't bring it back as control-enter at that time, and I guess when they DID bring it back I missed it.

Thanks for the info. So now people will be accidentally whispering instead of accidentally shouting if they hold shift too long after entering (say) "!". I'm not sure that's an improvement.

I don't believe that shift enter gives you a whisper in the most recent RC client. Details: https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-3434

The last couple RC's have whisper as an option along with shout and the default say
