Not really hand over hard cash or anything like that BUT I'm getting desperate here for advice.

OK usual thing old lappie is falling apart so it's time to invest in a new one. It has to be a Laptop as I do need it for other things than SL. Budget is as always very tight but I can stretch to £450 (ok sooo I could get a bit closer to £500 but at that stage I will be a snivelling wreck and you don't want to make me cry).

Sooooo can some kind person who knows more about computers and bargain prices get Googling and find me a Credit Crunch Bargain.

BTW UK based.

Zan,

head to www.novatech.co.uk

look for the X15 GS laptop

£449

C2D T5450 processor

2GB RAM

160G HDD

NVIDIA 9300M GS 256MB Graphics

Windows XP Home.

That should do the trick ;)

If I was buying a laptop, I would consider this barebones gaming laptop.

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3940221&Sku=O261-NB15

It has a built in nVidia 8600 video card... but you have to buy CPU+RAM+Harddrive to complete the system.

If you have an old laptop, you might be able to use the HD / ram /cpu from that to save some $$$ and upgrade those later when you can.

I'm not sure what the conversion rate is from CDN to your currency so, you will have to add it up and see if it's in your budget.

Looking good:-)

I must say that I've noticed more high spec comps at better prices but being such an idiot with teccie stuff I'm petrified at buying a computer AND still ending up getting the wrong one that won't run SL!!!!

Trust me that would happen!

Logging off for now but going to look at that and if anyone else has any suggestions or thinks that thats a winner I'll check back later.

Zan.

If you're shopping instore, ask the sales people if they can hook up potential contenders for your 'SL laptop' to their net connection, then go to this page:

http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/referrer/srtest

Choose 'Second Life' from the dropdown menu, and the site will tell you whether that laptop will run SL adequately for your needs.

I don't have the knowledge to recommend anything, but I can say that I got mine from PC World (what country are you in?). I picked one that had an nVidia card with shared memory - not a high end one by any stretch of the imagination. It didn't work for SL (I forget exactly why), so I took it back and swapped it for a different machine with an nVidea card and shared memory - also not a high end machine by any stretch of the imagination. Right now it has 6 avs logged in on standard SL viewers, and it's fine.

What I'm really saying is that I picked a machine that had an nVidia card in, albeit with shared memory, and they happily swapped it for a different machine when it wasn't up to the SL task that I wanted it for.

I just had a look at that with my laptop, but it needs an ActiveX control to be downloaded from the site. Are stores likely to do that?
