Ok I've been going at this for weeks and I can't seem to get a movie to PRELOAD in second life. I understand a 1GB movie is large but size doesn't matter. The movie should preload if it's being used by quicktime. I have to wait 20 mins for the movie to load which means it's downloading the movie and then playing it. Is there a way to make the movie pre load or just simply stream without downloading? I've tried looking all over the Internet to find anything on streaming and I can't seem to get information.

How can I go about getting HD movies to play in second life or is there a set format? I've seen the theaters in SL and believe me, I'd rather jump on my bed for hours than watch a horrible resolution of the movies they have out there. Anyone have ideas, softwares that can be used to load movies faster with good quality?

I've tried 30mb files of sample movies and they work fine good quality. Larger movies take forever.

It's essential to setup your encoder to render video in a format specifically designed for streaming otherwise the resulting clip will have to buffer in its entirety before playing in quicktime. Your software documentation should provide information on how to accomplish this, but if you mention what you're using perhaps someone will be able to advise you on the specifics for your case.

You are right that many people use low resolution videos within Second Life. This is more of a legacy move that's primarily done to cater to the lowest common denominator, those with slow computers, limited memory and limited bandwidth (still a significant percentage of users), but it might also be done to conserve their own bandwidth usage. There's no reason to limit yourself if you have the gpu power to handle high definition streams. My personal experience has been that a SD 480p stream will look fine when rendered at a bitrate of 768kbps, and an HD 720p stream will typically be free of noticable artifacting at 2048kbps. Experiment and find a balance that works well for you. For reference these figures apply for H.264 video.
