I recently started using the Kirstens viewer, but Firefox doesn't send the SLURLs to Kirstens. Can anyone advise how to fix this?

Also, today I tried to go to her blog to look for info on this but when I go to the blog's homepage, I get the message: "No posts match your query." Under her name it says "Retired". Does anyone know what's up? Yesterday the blog was there.... ???

I don't know if KirstenLee plans a fix for this, but the workaround that I use is to copy the slurl from Firefox and paste it into the chat window, hit enter, and and click on it...

Windows OS? In windows, they are set to open SL and so they will work if you have an SL viewer open. There is a way to set what application gets associated with what, but if you reset that then it will no longer work with the regular SL viewer or any that install into the SL installs.

Edit: I cannot find the specifics now. If you are a member of the inworld group, ask in group chat -- that is where someone mentioned changing the associated application.

Thanks Maureen, that is easier than using the map and typing in the coords, dunno why I didn't think of it.

LittleMe, the Kirstens viewer is packaged as a complete separate install rather than files to be added to a standard SL install. I did see in another thread that SLURLs are opened using whatever the last SL install on the system was; perhaps this is the problem, it's installed on its own. Even when the viewer is open the SLURL does nothing.

[edit: I didn't know there was an inworld group, I will search for it also.]

I suppose I could try installing it again... :( I tried using about:config to point Firefox to the Kirstens viewer, but it didn't seem to have any effect at all.

Supposedly, frustration with the negative reaction to the licensing of her client (not released as GPL but BSD) has led her to "retire." Looks like she took down the blog, at least.

Info about it here:

Yeah, every time I forget and click a slurl now, it tries to open my SL RC client rather than using the Kirsten one that I have running. I assumed it had to do with associated applications with things and someone mentioned it group chat that I could reset it, but I did not go into the specifics of how to do that.

Try this:

In Firefox, go to the Tools | Options dialog box.

Select the Applications button in the Options dialog box.

Scroll down till you get to one that says 'secondlife'.

In the right hand column, it probably says to use SecondLife. Click the down arrow, select Use Other (assuming the Kirsten viewer doesn't appear in the list), then browse to find it.

Then hit OK as necessary.

Don't expect any updates to this viewer any time soon:

Hmmm - I have nothing in the left or right column that says Secondlife or anything similar. Yet when I put a slurl in as a url and then click on Teleport in the loaded page, it will start up my SecondLife application.

Same here, Kidd, I have nothing in Firefox's Applications under Secondlife or anything resembling it. There are some entries in "about:config", which I changed according to a post I found in another thread about SLURLs and Firefox, but no luck.

I'm sad about Kirsten's decision; other than the SLURL issue I am loving the viewer, particularly since Nicholaz has also quit. Too bad the monkeys got her down. :(

IMO if her viewer lets people enjoy SL better, then it doesn't harm LL one bit, rather it's to LL's benefit, and if LL isn't complaining... then I don't see what excuse the monkeys have to throw poo.

What steps did the above consist of?

There's might be a registry entry that can be set to make a secondlife:// be handled by Kirsten's viewer.

In Windows XP,

Start-Menu, Run, enter "Regedit", click ok.

Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, secondlife, shell, open, command.

On the right, double click the ";(Default)" entry and put a path to Nicholaz.exe there (like "C:\Program Files\Kirstens S16\Kirstens S16.exe";)

It gets tricky when you are talking licenses. Anybody can compile or change the viewer for their own use no problem but if you then distribute this it is an entirely different matter. Kirsten did a great job, but the work she did wasn't writing all the code, she or any of the other 3rd party viewer distributors might write some patches but they are also gathering up and using patches made by other people who are working just as hard. Everyone is submitting their patches under a gpl license and to use this work you have to abide by the license provisions.

The gpl license provisions are clearly defined and isn't a jumble of legalese, it tells you exactly what you have to do to be in compliance and none of the other developers have had a problem meeting these requirements. This is really the key bit that everyone needs to understand, no one else has had problems being in compliance. Other developers were even trying to walk her through the steps she needed to take. I use and love the Kirsten viewer but Kirsten was not driven out by a radical few, she was using code published by other people who submitted their code expecting and demanding it stay gpl, by default she agreed to this when she decided to use the code.
