"Requests" jukebox from web - impossible dream from the UK?

There used to be a few handy places where you could request that a song be played on an internet radio station, touching the prim would launch the radio page.

I think that for the UK this is possibly not permissible any more for copyright reasons (and the radio stations I knew of are all gone). I'd like to give customers at my new place the ability to select their own choices of music as it always pleases. However even if this is possible for the UK would this be possible for people from other places (mainly thinking the States, Canada and OZ/NZ as well as Europe).

Any suggestions?

SAM Broadcaster has the capability (and comes with example pages) to set up a web-based request system. Would be a pain in the butt to integrate it into SL, but it could be done. Would require a public-facing webserver on a fixed IP address (or Dynamic DNS updates).

INTERESTING ... very very interesting. If only I knew someone with Sam already installed who hosts server space ... and can be easily bribed ... LOL.

Can you get Martini In the Morning? its a swing/jazz station, but they do take requests and i think you can do a page launch if you register.

There's, uh, probably a lot of things you didn't know about lindens. Another, another interesting, uh, lindenism, uh, there are only three jobs available to a linden. The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

Ooh thanks Maggie - will look this up later when I am home. Djing events are all well and good but it would be nice to have something selectable for the times when I and the gang are not going to be around.

I've been toying with the idea of setting up my SAM player to take requests, but it would kind of put me out there if anyone wanted to push some issues on me. I'd have to list out my entire music database (which is over 5k songs) so people would know what they could request, and that would be a bad and time consuming thing hehe.

I had 18 Gb of music on the hard drive of my old PC ... drive is alive but MB broken. I really should ressurect it but I always FRY electrical components so I'm scared to even try. Even taking all earthing precautions I am just too conduct-worthy!

Ask Travis Lambert how they do it at The Shelter. They've got a nice little system there.

Thanks :)

Here's what we did: We're using an existing shoutcast stream that had a request system, and created 'jukeboxes' inworld to point at it. When you click the jukebox, it takes you to the stream's webpage, where you can make requests.

Originally, the owner of this stream had nothing to do with SL.... but ended up joining later, and even made some customizations to make his station work even better for our needs. To put it simply: We just got real lucky ;)

Unfortunately, this particular stream doesn't have a whole lot of listener slots. While there's plenty for the Shelter + casual internet listeners... I think it'd turn into a tragedy of the commons sort of situation if others began using the same station.

My advice: Search Shoutcast for existing streams with a request system that might suit your needs - or setup SAM Broadcaster to create your own request system :)

Good Luck!

Thanks Travis - and Cris - things round full circle!

However I never considered searching Shoutcast, what a banana I am! :)
