So perhaps you've got yourself some land, and reasonably large home... how do you furnish it?
Perhaps a living room. Perhaps a bedroom. Perhaps a playroom, or cuddle scripts in rugs, etc. Maybe an outdoor area to take in the scenery and hang out with friends?
Then what?
I have a couple of empty rooms, but prims are a commodity, and I find that I don't want to just add stuff for the sake of filling the space. I would like it to be functional in some way too.
So what are sorts of unusual things have you done with your space?

My 'home' is my gardens, I have it mostly for visual. About 80 % of my prims are plants and landscaping items (I include my pagodas in that), and I have 4 sets of relaxation cushions (No balls, saves prims), a sex piano (It looks good lol, I havent used it...), and above m second level of gardens I have a bedroom, with a bed, chairs ,bookshelves (2, with a few good reading notecards...), and a cuddle rug... oh, I forgot to add in the fountains, I'm a founatin fiend lol... and about 50 of my 468 prims are from three teddy bears, which I'm using to keep people from building a surplus of items without my permission.

The homes I design usually have a formal dining room and kitchen area with a breakfast bar, then another room for a small bar or games such as a pool table or darts. I also make a bathroom set for the bath, vanity, sinks, linen closet and of course, a toilet!
A garden, pond, fountain and decorated patio or gazebo also add a nice touch.
Of course with more than 1/2 of sim, there are lots of prims to play with but I am careful to use only enough for what is needed.

I have a room usually set aside for a piano -- there are some lovely ones available that have not only nice music to be played on them, but romantic animations for them as well. That usually is nice for a smallish room and pretty low on prims.
Sometimes I have had a room set aside for intimate couples dancing -- perhaps in the same room as the piano, or perhaps in a different room -- some candles or other soft lighting, a nice rug, dancing balls, maybe a nice framed photo of your sweetie on the wall -- makes for a low prim, yet fun and intimate room.
I also second the idea of having a kitchen or a bathroom area -- there are nice sets that have *ahem* nice animations with them, so having these kinds of areas can be fun as well as making it feel more homey.

I have 2 rooms. living room has an assortment of chairs and sofa, along with stereo and big screen TV, and the bedroom. In the closet are all sorts of furnishings and such that can be pulled out as needed.

Asian theme running throughout - the house - I forget what it is called - but it is a LR with wings on either side that open onto a courtyard. Bedroom, bath, guest suite- 2 rooms - a kitchen area. The land is heavy landscaped with lovely trees, a Torii gate, Koi pond and fishing hole, a shack. There are different water features in several places and Herons and a goose keep the land from looking to static. My favorite thing is the Tibetan Prayer Wheels - absolutely my favorite.
On the adjoining side, it is more Western - with a nice two story house and light gardening to save on prims - that's the side I intend to rent if I ever get out of this slump and do something constructive.

Nina has one of the nicest SL homes I've been in. The entire lower level is her workshop...building space, texture finder, photo studio. Very attractive, yet very functional.
The upper level is a large studio apartment. Mostly living room, with a conversational grouping, and a sleeping area behind a partition. There's also a screened off hot tub, if I recall.
Again, everything you'd want for a Second Life, unless you regularly throw big parties...but no extraneous nonsense.

I have the extremely common (popular?) one up, one down freebie on a 1024 plot on a hill but it faces west for the sunset. I've shaped a terrace and put most of my meagre prim count out in flowers, a path and a fence(low) I have one of John Durants delightful sunbathe blankets permanently set out there. Home furnishings amount to a fire, a couch and a bed upstairs. Our house is mainly used for changing in. My garden rolls downhill to Egon's lake and delightful gardens. The lake has a timed fountain. When I'm in my lounge a little way back from the window I sometimes forget and see the display and think WTF?!? RAIN?!? in SL?!?? LOL SL cracks me up sometimes. IF i have prims left over, I use them for my art collection, pictures i have purchased from the artists who painted them or photographed them, and also a collection of lowish prim objects that please me to behold. I find that having these things around me in SL inspires me and soothes my soul.

My house has only a few rooms, all of which could be considered livingrooms/lounges, two of which are outdoors and I only actually ever use the one overlooking the water. No bedrooms since I don't sleep, no bathrooms, one storage room that could actually be floated up in my lab. Once I got the house built I was fairly uninspired to furnish it--guess it's not my thing--but got some nice color changing pieces from Prim Pincher and made my own seating for the outdoor areas. The long upper room has become something of a gallery--mostly empty. As I've come to realize I don't need a house, per se I think I'm going to pack it all up and totally redo the place as a garden.

It's great how 'prim-budget' translates well to minimalism. Do some research, take notes, and explore how negative space can energize a build/design.

I was wondering if I was missing something here. I guess the "nesting" instinct doesn't translate as well into SL. You just don't need all the usual RL conveniences.
What I do need is a place to hang my hat, change, do searches, IM, manage inventory, and so on, in peace. And to have a friend or two over, on occasion.
I am very much attached to my home (a castle). Despite it being a prefab, I completely fell in love with it the moment I saw it. I must have looked at a dozen castle builders, and a couple of dozen castles, and this was the only one that screamed "LIVE HERE NOW!" to me. It's on a 4096 plot, and the rest of the land is frankly barren, except for a matching gazebo, and I like it that way.
But after I finished furnishing it (yes, a rather large dungeon, a seating area, and a bedroom - that is frankly cosmetic), I'm not finding any uses for the other spaces. I put a deluxe pose stand and a rug in a room, LOL.
I think I'll just leave it, and add baubles and art as I happen upon things. Or maybe what's missing is the bleeding?

My decor has generally reflected my state of mind. At the start, my partner and I lived in a rented skybox which we slowly furnished with mementos, mostly pictures, paintings and flowers. Nice bed, some nice Aubusson rugs that we got at yard sales. We had a Pillow Talk apple tree (climbable!) up on the roof with a snuggle blanket under it for watching the stars... after a month or so it had grown into a place that felt like home.
After the partnership ended I lived for a time in a grove of trees and flowers, which I had a happily distracting time shopping for. Straylight, Relic, the Botanical... Isablan herself came and took a look, and it really was a very healing project. I had a couple of big carpets down, a couple of hummingbirds, a couch. Lovely spot, a double plot at the Baths with my own bit of beach. Double chaise or two by the water. Oh and every now and then my lovely black McLean horse Othello would show up - not to be ignored as part of the decor. Such a good boy...
Lately I've put up my Barnesworth Anubis longhouse. What a terrific bit of construction it is, too. I copied his demo, and put in the Pillow Talk animated couches and chairs. People should really be aware of the tiny flower seats that PT sell - I have several of them out on the grass, and if there are more endearing items in all of SL, I've yet to see them. Pictures on the walls, the lovely big carpets. No loo.

Well...my gardens have changed ^^ I change my land often..anyway, now its actually a home, so I can better answer the furnishings thing...
I have gardens out front and under part of the house, then the first floor has a chair for my Mistress and cushions for myself, 2 sisters, and one brother... Also has a couple trees in a planter (Linden trees i mean) and a 'cuddle rug' i think its called
Second level has three beds, three dressers, a small pagoda-y thing and teleport to third floor
Third floor has two beds (One nice one, one lower prim one of my creation, like the other three), a larger dresser/vanity thingy for me, and another dresser for my Mistress, as well as a small bridge and another tree....
Lesse..there is art on every floor, though not tons, and there are windows on all floors...
On the roof is a three-pagoda thingy.dunno what to call it..decoration, goes over three trees... and theres a bridge in the lower garden as well... hmm.. I think thats about it... yeah
Oh, and all dressers have a heart-shaped candy box on them, and Mistresses has a teddy bear, and mine has a jewelry box and mirror as well.... and all beds have curtains around them...
