It Doesn't Work If You Type Like This In Title Case All The Time.

The best way to get up-to-date installation info is directly from the opensim crowd on the freenode irc channel.

If you have not used irc before, and do not have an irc client, then simply go to www.mibbit.com. Click the Start Chatting Now button

In the Browse IRC Networks box type opensim

the channel you are looking for is the #opensim@irc.freenode.net

Change your nickname here also, if you like, or at an time in the channel by making the command \nick EricTheRed (or whatever)

The crowd here are very friendly and will answer you. The total number of users is misleading as many log in, then go to work or shopping, so they can catch up with all the chat later when they get back in.

I did once have a standalone island which was actually 2 sims - I downloaded it/them from Open Life as a ready-to-run. It was easy, and it worked quite well and it was good fun. Then it was lost in a computer crash. All my subsequent attempts to set up a new standalone sim, whether from OL or OpenSim have been unsuccessful.
I have received helpful advice on this matter, but the problem is with starting up the standalone - it gives some error messages.

So, good luck (you might need all the luck you can get!) but I hope it works for you.

Though Pep may not have mentioned it, full caps is no better, and may actually degrade results, when compared to title casing.
