i have not been here for some time now, and i am interested in putting my lindens to good use. I have about L$10,000, and im looking to invest in a fledgling business or a new builder with talent. However i do not know where to start, and i am in dire need of some direction(good sand boxes, what kind of deals should i work out with a new builder or business owner). Thanks to everyone in advance.

jamil

p.s has anyone seen desmond lately, he was always good with kind of advice. Thanks again 1 percenters.

Sorry, but $L10,000 Linden is not an investment, it's only tier on a small plot for one month at best...

Send it to me, I'll do stuff with it. And then I'll demand a government bailout. Will be rich.

Investing money with nameless people is a recipe for getting ripped off. Cash out your $35 bucks and put it in your bank.

Most of the people you could confidently invest in most likely already have money.
That does'nt mean that it is impossible to find a young or new person with talent that needs
that kind of investment. However finding that person may be like finding a needle in a haystack.

Just curious, but why not start your own business?

It's a very thoughtful idea, Jamil, to set up such a legacy for aspiring creatives. I've been going through the process of establishing a business (don't need any extra money lol), and find that the thing I value/d most has been information, and the ability to learn from other business owners. And so my thought is....perhaps you could spend your money on setting up a group and meeting place for business owners and aspiring owners to meet and swap ideas. Granted, this takes time and you did mention that you arent spending as much of that in sl now....just thinking aloud is all :)

Heya Jamil it's been a while!

I'd suggest going to talk to Fogwoman Gray or Muttenchops Chaplin.

They are 'deans' of the Caledon Oxbridge University Resident Gateway run by NCI (where some new residents begin when they start in the world) and they may be familiar with who is new but perhaps a diamond in the rough.

Just search 'university' inworld and Caledon Oxbridge will show up on the first page, amongst a bunch of real universities. Fifth, last I checked. Crazy huh? Not an intended consequence, but hey, at least we teach something...

You're better off just going to a club and tipping the staff huge amounts of money, because 10K won't get you far otherwise.

It's rare that I disagree with Desmond, but this is one of those times. First I have to chime in with most of the rest that L$10,000 is not enough to get started. If you had a specific business model planned and understood how you are going to use it to make a profit, then $L10,000 probably would be possible, but very difficult. It really is not much money.

My suggestion would be to hold onto your money, build up more of a savings and also spend more time researching and talking with others. Then you will be on much firmer ground.

I would say I have doubts in the whole idea, but let's elaborate so that there is a logical chain here.

To explicitly start a business from scratch in SL, upfront capital is not a requirement at all, since all the basic and many complex tools needed to create objects in SL are available for free if you know where to look -- pretty much no serious business model that involves creating content cannot be started effectively in a very nomadic and penniless fashion. In fact, having upfront capital is not going to make it much easier. Once you have some products, they require shelf space to be sold and word of mouth to be known, but shelf space can be acquired cheap or even for free if you look, and there's always XStreetSL and places that will let you keep an XStreetSL box for free, and word of mouth travels on it's own. If you find a niche and make something good, people will come, if you don't, throwing money at the problem won't solve it.

Business models that do require investment, like land renting, event running, complex scripting projects that involve stable offworld servers, or things that involve commissioning products and services from others, require far larger amounts of money (in excess of ten times that much at least in many cases) and involve far higher risks, which would imply trusting on a scale higher than commonly seen in SL.

You can, obviously, try looking for someone as Desmond described, however, I doubt that will lead to any productive results -- either your money won't help them do what they weren't able to do themselves in the first place, or it will be lost.
