Newbie question-Long shot question about a skin, please help

Hi Everyone!

This is my first post so please bear with this newbie.

I recently joined SL (August 15th), and I have been reading the forums like a madwoman.

I have been searching SL for tons of freebies and I have found A LOT (A big THANK YOU to everyone who provides the freebies, they are very much appreciated!).

In a box I got called "Newbie Helper", it has a skin in it called "Tiffany" that I am wearing and I LOVE it, except I would like to have more versions of it, with makeup, the skin I have now has minimal makeup.

I looked at the "Properties" to see who the creator is and to possibly cross reference that and find out who made the skin, where it is located so that I could go and buy a few different versions of it. The problem is there isn't a name of the skin creator, only my name is on there as the "owner".

Now I am worried I am wearing a stolen skin! I have read a lot of information on the forums and I am hoping that is not the case!

I have a picture of it on flickr and I will post the link, my question is, can anyone tell me who makes the skin, and if it is stolen? I am really sorry if it is, I will delete it immediately and buy one if that is the case.

Hi, Lydia. Welcome to SL and the Resident Answers.

Something really strange has been happening with the most recent server update. I, too, have seen the creator tag get messed up. But here is a helpful tip that solves various issues and will eventully be the first thing you do when something strange happens.

From the top menu, go to Edit > Preferences and then the Network tab (I *think* but I could be wrong). Near the top is a place to set the size of the Cache and a blue button label "Clear Now". Click that, shutdown SL and start it up again. I don't know if that will put the creator tag back to the original but it does not hurt to try.

If you like freebie shopping (and who doesn't) have a look at slexchange. You can search by price and find more freebies and dollarbies than you can wear in a month of trying.

Those lips remind me of the old Sin Skins. She has a new line out, but I *think* she still had the others for sale last time I was there, if you want to check them.

Seller is Nada Daviau, but not necessarily the creator. Selling for 1L$ which is common. Most of the other things I saw by the seller are full perm for resale so I would not bet that they are the creator. Still, for 1L$ you can get an un-bugged copy and go from there.

We may lambast you for feeling timid about asking a question ... but 99% of the people here love to help.

LOL thanks for that. I am mostly a lurker, and don't like to post (I like being able to find out answers for myself), but when I thought I might have been using a stolen skin, I got skeered!

Yup, sorry to say but you are wearing a stolen skin. That is Lost Thereian's Alina skin. If you want to buy the real deal (including other makeups and skintones), Lost's store is called Naughty.

Yeah I haven't even logged in today. Yesterday I had one problem after another logging in.
A while back ago with my alt I made some textured cornrows, but after I boxed item and sent it self the creator name had changed.
I have no clue why the creator name changed.
It really upset me too.
I have also had items that the creator name just quit showing up, even textures involved.
I assumed it was because the avatar left and so everything associated with them left or some other weird glitch.
When I was new this use to really, really bother me.
Yet there are ways too, so it may be stolen skin but others would know more about this then myself.
If it is you could always buy the skin that you like as way to show gratitude to the creator.
It is hard being a creator, and it always nice if someone shows that they are appreciated by buying something from them.

Stephanie-Thank you for informing me, as soon as I can get back in world, I am taking it off. I cannot support wearing something stolen and it angers me that people would do something so stupid and set up a newbie with something stolen. If I find the box location again, I am going to report the abuse.

FD-Thanks for your input! It is so frustrating, I can barely keep up! I really like SL, but in light of all the stolen items I MAY have in my inventory now, it bothers me that newbies are taken advantage of.

If you want to find some genuine freebies, keep an eye on the SL Free Style blog http://slfreestyle.blogspot.com/ which features gifts that designers are giving away to customers - some of them may be limited time offers but you should find plenty of stores to check out on there.

Of course we don't get as many choices with guy skins, but after seeing this, I wonder WHY I paid L$2000 for one of my last skins?

OMG! I am going to faint! $2000L??? I know that is only about $8 USD but are there no skins for men that might be $1L? That are LEGAL?

a decent male skin, always around 2000L or more... I think I paid 750 for mine, and I like it as well as others... was going to change for an updated look but I can't see paying so much to change a over 2 year old LOL.

I have a box of Free skins out next to a money tree and newbie kit (Lenko) I have no clue whats all in it (male and female-mostly female) but I think that they are all old freebies from when I rezzed 2.5 years ago.

And it never dawned on me to look and see if they are or how would I even know if they are stolen skins? is there a list of stolen skins anywhere? like we had here for the stolen animations? I would love to cross check the free box I have out to help, 'cause its not helping if they are stolen!

Hi Lydia, and welcome to SL!

Most decent (unstolen) skins are going to run you at least L$500, unless the creator is having a going out of business sale or something. Here's why: Skins take tremendous amounts of time to make (probably 20+ hours? I'm not a skinner so I couldn't say for sure) and most people don't buy more than 3 or 4 their entire lifetimes. There are exceptions (*pokes Ann*) but the turn around on skins isn't nearly as high as it is on clothing. Granted, L$500 doesn't come near to compensating the time and effort, but I'm willing to pay around L$2000 for an amazing skin. I wouldn't pay that for a dress to save my soul, because I like to buy dresses, and will buy several at the same time from the same creator; I'd spend the same amount of L$ but would feel like I came away with better value.

Oryx-Thank you for the information. I honestly had no idea, and yes knowing it would take that long to make a skin, I would pay that much.

I did IM Lost Thereian and tell her about the skin situation, I have not received a response yet as I am sure she is very busy, but I am going to find out who sold it. I didn't buy it from someone, it was in a store, so I am going to check my transactions, and get back to her.
