Hey all.
I am so scared of search and how hard it is to get anywhere that I thought I would ask you for advice!
I want to cut a piece of land out on my plot so I can make a separate landing point to my main store and be able to put the new landing point in search, as I am doing two different lines of products and this is the only way I can do it until I can move to a bigger plot.
If I start carving up land am I going to lose my place in search?
Thanks for any help.

At the time they changed things when joining parcels, they were asked what will happen when you split a parcel, but they didn't answer. There's a good possibility that the largest piece will be the one that maintains the settings, etc., and will be the one that generally maintains rankings.
But rankings are largely affected by Picks, as you know, and a parcel's Picks were not necessarily created at the current landing point. In fact, the chances are that they were made all over the parcel. So splitting a parcel will almost certainly split the current Picks, and the current rankings will be affected.
[added] If you only cut a tiny piece out, to use as a landing point, there's a very good chance that you won't cut any Picks out of the main piece - or very few.

Before cutting anything out, it's best to check that the largest piece maintains the settings.

what is there to be scared of? just do it and see what happens, if you drop in the search, then eventually it should catch back up and put you back...
hopefully
what is the worst that can happen, you drop out of search??
with the way SL is lately, doesn't make much difference either way

ah well other than trying, if you really want that piece of land for a separate landing spot, there is not much else one can do
(I would still try it)
I do not put much weight on search results, prolly because I tend to skip the first page of results and look for lesser known places when shopping

Just to let you know, I got brave and pressed the button! Everything seems ok....for now! I made a parcel of just over 512-ish and purposely set it up so that whilst at different levels the land I was cutting was away completely from my original landing point at my main store... Fingers crossed! I will keep you updated if you like! I am guessing that if nothing has changed now..12-ish hours on then I may just be ok

Don't forget to let us know, Tiana. I think it'll be the first test on splitting land and trying to maintain the existing rankings, and it'll be very useful information.
You won't know for certain for several days. The engine crawls the pages every 12 hours, but I don't think we know how often a fresh set of pages is created. I don't think it is done at the time a parcel is created (split or joined) though.

I hate being the guinea pig! But needs must really...For what I wanted the spot for it made no sense to buy anymore land which would take me over my tier now just for a little spot... Its nerve wracking but nothing is "un-doable" If i do end up lost in search as a result..I will just have to pull my finger out to rectify it!

Don't forget to to do the other things that are necessary with the 512 bit.

Just the usual stuff - relevantly named/described objects on it, Name and Description, and get some friends to create Picks on it.

Just an update: I was nervous about cutting out a piece of land from my plot so I could set a different landing point as I did not want to mess up all my hard work to get placed in search decently. Well as I said in this thread I did it..I closed my eyes and clicked! I am happy to say in case anyone is interested that my search results have not been affected. The parcel I cut was smaller then the main and I did it as far away from the original landing point as was feasible so I did not mess up any picks that may have been set there. Case closed
