Hi I'm trying to help a friend figure out why she can't connect to SL. She is in China. I don't think it is a connection issue as others there can connect. She says she gets a black screen then SL crashes after a second. Her machine is this:
Operating System: Windows XP CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6300, 1.86GHz Chipsets: Intel Broadwater Q963/Q965 Computer Memory: 2GB Graphics Card: ATI Radeon X1300
She said she downloaded the latest drivers. Any ideas, what she can try? Thanks!

Any words at all before the screen goes black?
Does it lock up the computer completely?
What are the region and locale settings?
Can she run a memory test?
Are the fans working?
Can she check her log file?
Has she ever been able to connect to SL or is this her first try?

Thanks , no she has never been able to connect. She sent a movie of what happens. She hits the shortcut on her desktop. Black screen for one second and poof. No it doesn't lock up the machine. She originally said she was on XP but in the movie it is obviously Vista ? I will ask the other questions. you posed. Tough working with a twelve hour time difference between here and Shanghai.

Does she have some form of high speed? My friend tried to get set up with dial up.....yes that's right, I said dial up. Anyway, the actions sound familiar as what was going on with her until I realized what kind of connection she had.

China has very strict censorship policies. Could that be the problem?
From news.zdnet.com/2008-9588_22-6145253.html
"There was some issue with China Telecom and Second Life in August, which we at Anshe Chung Studios were able to resolve, and Second Life is accessible to most residents of China again. At the moment things are normal and quiet. Of course we never know what somebody in the bureaucracy may do tomorrow, but there is a general trend of things in China becoming much, much more liberal, in practical terms, than even two years ago. But, yes, while there is that strong general trend, an unlucky backlash can always happen."
Maybe your friend is logging in through an ISP that has blocked Second Life?

Thank you, I don't think it is a censorship issue because others there are logging on beside her. I'm posting her log file here . http://pastebin.ca/904728The last few lines are below. I think Ken March is a Chinese speaking SL user with technical knowledge - you might see if he can help. Same thing for Jolly Heron. IM them and ask if they might be able to help. There's a Chinese language SL forum at http://www.slchinese.com/forum/register.php . The question of what kind of internet connection - dialup or broadband - might be important.

I never heard any chinese met this kind of problem until now. I'm afraid it's a problem about the firewall. Anyway, please ask her to contact my QQ: 88055177 .
