Ability to copy complete IM conversations to a notecard?

This question may have been asked already, but I couldn't find an answer when I did a search. I made a notecard of an immediate message conversation, then did a cut and paste. When I read the notecard, it only had the other person's replies and not mine. Is there an option that would allow me to retain my comments?

Yes, it should. How exactly were you doing this?

Oh, dear... I dunno if this is what you're talking about, but while trying this I realized the particular IM conversation I was copying was missing my name near the beginning of the log

From: someone
[2007/12/18 19:10] : when you type... remember P:
[2007/12/18 19:11] Other Person: i remember the sound typing thing
[2007/12/18 19:11] Other Person: but the glow, i never saw before
[2007/12/18 19:11] Other Person: do you need some lindens?
[2007/12/18 19:11] : Nope
[2007/12/18 19:11] : :O
[2007/12/18 19:11] : Why, you want some?

Where my name is supposed to be, there's nothing. That's in the log of conversation I've had with that person during a previous session. A bit further down the log, my name starts appearing normally

When I read back through old logs of IMs, and I don't see my side of the conversation, I usually assume that I'd been using voice and the other party hadn't (no working microphone, or whatever).

The conversation was in a normal IM window? Not some kind of scripted thing that uses llInstantMessage?

Does this happen with new IM chats?

Do you have a log of the IM session?

Actually, now that I recall, it was copied from my chat history. It always happens that my part of the conversation is never recorded in chat history when it's an IM conversation, only the op's IM replies. Would logging my IM's make a difference? At present I haven't made that an option.

When you talk in an IM window, your chat shows up there along with the rest.

You can if you want have incoming IMs show up in chat history. Your comments in the IM window won't show up in the chat history.

If you want to copy both parts of an IM chat session, copy the chat in the IM window.

SL is so screwed up now I can't even start a group IM chat. Sheesh.

Kudos, I think you nailed it, Suezanne. I'm unsettled though because now there's no lead on the weirdness I pasted XD

I just copy the conversation in chat window then create notecard and paste , save the notecard. I do it sometimes for tutorials from friends.
Or look up for my chat txt in desktop of SL chats but often I have to scroll through over a years conversation.

Suezanne, thanks. Think that'll explain what was happening. The unfortunate thing was that I had closed the IM conversation before realizing that I needed to copy it. I'll have to change my option so that I can view my complete IM conversations from chat history.

Your comments made in the IM window won't appear in the chat history.

The option you get is whether the incoming IM chat will or won't appear in the chat history.

Your chat in the IM chat window is outgoing, not incoming.

You can set an option to show the last part of the previous session. Maybe that would let you copy what you want from the IM session even after you closed it - by reopening it and finding the last part of the previous session there.

As Osprey said, you can log your IM sessions.

The option to log IM sessions is in Preferences / Communication.

You get to Log Instant Messages or not, and there are options that determine whether there are timestamps and whether to include dates with the timestamps.

The path the chatlogs are in are shown next to the Change Path button.

I log both Chat and IMs. I wish it was possible to make it where they were always logged, regardless of uninstalls and reinstalls and deleting your settings.xml file when things get really screwed up.
