NOOB question re buying

OK I thought I had this figured before I left "THOSE" islands but obviously not. I just bought an item, my first, in SL and I'm having a few probs with it.

An "object" appears in my inventory with the name of the dress I bought on it. If I try to wear this, all I get is the actual display card of the item I bought like a hoola hoop round my waist.

I was reading one thread and I was wondering if I have to drag this object to the ground and open it to get the new dress or what. And I can't seem to find anywhere that will let me do that.

When I bought the item, I clicked the display poster, selected buy and clicked ok thru the next couple of screens. I've been back to THE islands to see if I can find any info and been thru the help and all I can find as a possible solution is that drop and open thing.

Any help would be appreciated (after u stop sniggering thats is ) lol

Try going to a sandbox or other area that allows building, drag the object from your inventory to the ground, right click the object and open it, then copy the contents to your inventory. (Be sure to clean up after yourself by either putting the container back in your inventory or deleting it)

Yes you have most probably purchased a boxed item. You do indeed need to drag the item onto the ground, then right click the box & select 'Open' form the pie menu. A window will appear showing the contents of the box, and two option buttons on the bottom of the window, copy to inventory & copy+wear items .. choose one of these two buttons & click.

The items should now appear in a folder within your inventory, and usually with teh same name as the original box.

If you can't find an area that allows you to drag items to the ground then search in Places for 'Sandbox' .. there are several public sandboxes dotted around for you to use

at least the box didn't end up on your head. LOL yes, the midline prim is very popular.

I specifically make my store objects fit nicely on an Avie's head.
Even the wall art.

ooh! great idea! except, i make my stuff "copy" instead of "contents" so they don't have to rez anything. however, i can be arranged on the L$1 stuff. LOL

What do you do if the contents have a "no copy" tag?

No-copy items will go from the box into your inventory. Meaning that the box on the floor will be left empty.

If you buy stuff that comes in a box, like taht item, you need to go somewhere where you can place teh box on teh ground to open it and take out teh contents into your inventory. Any sandbox will do for this. Unfortunately, most public sandboxes are griefer-parties these ays.

However, most stores that sell stuff this way also allow you to rez objects (at least for a short time), long enough to do this kind of box-opening.
