Blah, why can't anything ever be simple. When I made this account I picked a Furry as my avatar during the registering process, but on logging into SL I've ended up with a bog standard human. Apparently you can change your avatar type, but I can't find the option anywhere. The whole reason I registered here in the first place was for the novelty of a Furry avatar, and I've already deleted one account due to avatar issues - I don't want to have to delete this one too. :(

Relax... Here's how you change your look:

Open the Inventory window, and scroll to the Library folder.

Once there, find the Furry Male or Furry Female (depending on your gender) folder and just drag it onto your body.

After a few moments, you'll be the cute, fuzzy self you wanted to be all along.

Hope that helps! :3

you just beat me to it! :D

Just to add that the shape & outfit is in the 'Clothing' folder within the Library.

Yes, thats one of the beauties of this 'game'

You simply attach a new body whenever you want to change it. The basic furry avatar is typically fairly inferior to what is available on the market by the talented people who make these things (much as the basic starter human skin/shape is very poor compared to one that has been made by someone entirely dedicated to the task) so all you can do is become anything you want to be by simply choosing to wear the suit you want.

Thankyou all, I've done it now. ^_____^

Sabrina - Yeah, the default suit is rather flat, though I somehow managed to spend a whole hour tweaking the proportions and colours, having a good go at making it look less like just a human wearing a mask. And the body tattoos jazzed things up a bit. ^^ But the next thing on my list is, as you said, to seek out someone who makes the custom body parts.

Thanks again!

If you want a fairly realistic Furry Avatar, I highly recommend Jakkal's Werehouse.

For a more toon-like one, Fuzzy Things has really expressive foxes, with lots of facial expressions; Luskwood Creatures has a very diverse selection; Teeka Fox makes furry avatars that are slender and winsome...

Try the store at Serenity Woods, and ask the furries there for advice. You'll find most of the better avatar makers have vendors there.

Switching your avatar away from the defaults should be a serious first goal for any SL resident. Identity is important.

No everything is possible though. I'd love a semi-transparent avatar, but so far I can't build one. Its possible to make parts of an avatar invisible, if you know LSL and what textures to set... But so far I have not found a way to make an AV partially transparent.

Sorry, off topic, just venting slightly...

Khainne - Hmm... can SL make textures that reflect its surroundings? Like a silvery mirror skin? Maybe that would be the way to go. Then, even though the avatar wouldn't be truly transparent, at least it would give the impression of blending in with the environment...

Ceera - Great stuff, I'll have a look at all of those, thanks. :) How does one find these vendors? Are they physical places within the SL world?

No, SL does not support real reflections. A mirrored surface that actually reflects what is near it is impossible in SL.

Search for any of those maker names that I mentioned in Search, and you'll find their stores. The listings in Search will have teleport links to their store locations.

As far as I am aware, all of them, except for Fuzzy Things, have vendors in the Serenity Woods sim. It's a furry community, and there are several other furry sims attached to it in close proximity. When you teleport to Serenity woods, you'll arrive at a teleport center. Turn right 90 degrees, walk out of the teleport center, and fly upwards, above tree top height. You'll then be able to see the Serenity Woods store to your left, on top of a hill.

Jakkal's Werehouse has a vendor in the Serenity Woods store, a larger store in the Bruin sim, and also I believe Jakkal owns Theiropolis Island and has a main store there. (Not sure on the exact sim name for Theiropolis, but Bruin is definite). (FYI, the image in my avatar pic in my profile here in the forums is me, in my Jakkal's Werehouse red fox vixen avatar.)

Luskwood has a whole sim, that is also a furry community.

Fuzzy Things has a few sites, although I don't think she has a vendor at Serenity woods yet. She's definitely in Search, however.

Lost Creatures is another major furry avatar maker you'll want to check out. Again, they are at Serenity Woods, as well as other places. Forgot to mention that vendor last time.

Pen,
Yes. Down at the bottom center of your screen, is a button labled search. Click that and select the "places" tab. enter as search criteria "Werehouse", or "Luskwood", or "Serenity".

or you can search by people for "Jakkal" or "Teeka" or whomever... and look at their "picks". Most merchants will put a tab for thier main store in their picks.

edit:
You can also search on the websites: SLEXCHANGE or SLBOUTIQUE. You will find quite a few furry AV's on those 3rd party websites and they can be delivered in world.

As a consumer with about 100 avatars now, here's my thoughts:

Right now Ninja Weasel make the best, most attractive, and most distinctive avatars out there. Teleport to the sim "Tokachi City" and check them out. The huskies sold on Northstar are very good, and PEX (Paw Exchange, I think) in the Rainbow Tiger mall.

The Lusk and Lost Creatures avs are both good, but almost everyone has one or the other.

There's a lot of other avatars out there, but I don't think any of the ones still available are really up to the quality of the ones I've named. The Aventity foxes were amazing, but they went off the market when copybot hit. Evangeline and Lucah have some amazing avs, but their only vendors were on Taco and that whole sim has gone. I don't know if they're going to come back.

Jakkals avs are technically amazing, but they just look wrong to me.
