Sims/Server?

This was just brought up briefly in-world, and someone said that they recall Jack saying that there was one (Full, or equivalent) sim per CPU, per server, so 4 full sims per server. However, the Wiki ( http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Openspace#Openspace ) shows it as 2 Sims per Host CPU, so 8 full sims per server.

How many sims are hosted per CPU on LL's servers, and is the wiki incorrect/outdated?

As I recall it is 1 sim to a core and there are 4 cores to a server. Also, I remember reading that LL uses Virtual Machines, so one server doesn't necessarily mean 4 sims.

Calveen's right. I thought about it more after I answered the question in world. It's technically not 1 sim per CPU, but 1 sim per core with 2 dual core processors per server. So 4 cores and 4 sims per server. I always think of of the cores as being separate CPUs, but I may have a concussion. Probably not, but it's the best excuse I can think of right now.

Personally, I always term cores as CPUs... I know it's not accurate, but I do it anyway >.<

and I can't be sure, but I think it's 2 sims per core for Homestead sims.

Its all shared resources.
Which is why some region struggle. 1 busy region will make it rough on the next 3.
and cores are not separate CPU's it just processes 2 or 4 times faster, depending on the core) but still Shares 1 CPU .. AND yea they can also throw on open space sims in the mix for 8 Regions to equal 4 regular regions. Which is why they have strict rules regarding OS sims because they want to squeeze as much out of you whoops! I mean the hardware they can:rolleyes:

Well I think it depends on what you mean by "seperate".

Each core operates independently of the other. One core under heavy load doesn't necessarily effect a neighboring core. So to the end user, they're running 4 *seperate* processes.

and at the hardware level you can clearly see four seperate cores on a single CPU:

there are 2 cores per 'cpu' chip. Each core is it's own cpu essentially.

From Online wiki!
A multi-core processor (or chip-level multiprocessor, CMP) combines two or more independent cores (normally a CPU) into a single package composed of a single integrated circuit (IC), called a die, or more dies packaged together. A dual-core processor contains two cores, and a quad-core processor contains four cores. A multi-core microprocessor implements multiprocessing in a single physical package. A processor with all cores on a single die is called a monolithic processor.

Multiprocessing is the use of two or more central processing units (CPUs) within a single computer system. The term also refers to the ability of a system to support more than one processor and/or the ability to allocate tasks between them.[1] There are many variations on this basic theme, and the definition of multiprocessing can vary with context, mostly as a function of how CPUs are defined (multiple cores on one die, multiple chips in one package, multiple packages in one system unit, etc.).

Multiprocessing sometimes refers to the execution of multiple concurrent software processes in a system as opposed to a single process at any one instant. However, the terms multitasking or multiprogramming are more appropriate to describe this concept, which is implemented mostly in software, whereas multiprocessing is more appropriate to describe the use of multiple hardware CPUs. A system can be both multiprocessing and multiprogramming, only one of the two, or neither of the two.

can be Quite confusing at times .

It's usually put in a quote. Otherwise the sexy ladies will be thinking you're all smart and want to be making babies with you.

Yes, the Wikimonsters will come and spout random false information at you if you do it.

I know this, for it was on a wiki.

*sigh*

I almost wish for those long ago days of '06 when it was a nice, simple 1 server = 1 sim and 8k concurrency was a busy night.

LL does not use virtual machines in the sense of "VMware", SL uses virtual machines in the sense of "Java VM". The term is overloaded.

1. Cores are separate CPUs.
2. That's not how you use an apostrophe.
