Mitch Kapor's company shows you hands free 3d controls using your body which is apparently still in development. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2t52gkAwJq8 http://www.handsfree3d.com/ It's super cool but I'm kinda lazy too. It'd be a nifty option though. Would you want that kind of functionality? Addendum: I just found they had an object editing demo as well! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqwUn_KgrDQ

I think it would be a good way to get more into some things- stop it perves - but like when u go to a club- sometimes i'm sitting there 'chair dancing'. It could be like the Nintendo WII Fit (Which is gatheirng dust in my house, btw)

It could be like the Nintendo WII Fit (Which is gatheirng dust in my house, btw) It made me think of Wii Fit as well, except it would be like the Porn Star edition - would come with software, the webcam and some cheap plastic dance pole and a bottle of no-name baby oil. Seriously though, I think I might try it if it were reasonably priced but I don't think I'd be an early adopter.

Might be handy for building if you can use your hands to make a cube, stretch & rotate it etc.

needs way more work to be useful. Like Tegg said gestural spell casting for changing modes and such.

There have been several similar devices. There was one from many years ago that would move the mouse based on head movements. All such attempts have failed commercially.

Pretty cool... I had a concept going in my mind for something similar, but would have never gotten around to doing it. Glad to see that more immersion in 3d interaction is becoming more and more possible, and more and more available.
I just hope someday for the neural interface that allows you to essentially be in the SL world while you're asleep in RL =P

I think on my list of things I'd like for SL, neck attachment points and new avatar meshes are tops. Hands-free SL? Never even made it on my list.
But I can imagine it's uses for the SL sex industry.

I wonder what results you could get from combining this video based system with things such as brainwave input devices like the one shown at http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=head-games-video-controller-brain . I wonder if their video camera is making any use of infrared - using IR might make it easier to distinguish between the person and the background, or allow facial temperature patterns to be used to help detect emotional state. It would be nice if the display didn't have to be a tiny rectangle in a fixed position, perhaps something like the video glasses shown at http://www.kopin.com/digital-ivision/video/ would serve to let you escape from being stuck in front of a screen with your viewpoint confined to few square feet.

But I can imagine it's uses for the SL sex industry. Remember that this bit wasn't really being developed by SL, but rather by Kapor Industries, so it wouldn't have been taking away from any SL developments. Also note that this video is from mid-08.

From: Ghosty Kips I'm thinking of it as a way for the handicapped to access SL. I'm finding this idea fairly awesome I've seen some videos where people with different forms of disabilities use joystick type things and manipulate stuff using their mouth or just with one hand or foot which is cool. It was also nice to see that virtual ability island has their own orientation starting point now and there are people there to help you get started and it'd be great to see some of these companies work with places like that to make the experience easier. It was hard enough for me as an able bodied person to figure out SL when I first started that it would be nice to see some of the barriers to access removed where possible. If anyone is interested: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Virtual_Ability

I tend to think we would be better off with a pair of radar/whatever tracked handcontrollers each with multiple buttons that sent bac their orientation to be added to their X/Y/Z position. It's not rocket science and could be used for other platforms too.

It would seem to me you could put markers similar in nature to upc codes on gloves to aid the computer vision system in recognizing precisely which part of each hand and finger is where.
Dual five button pressure sensitive wireless mice with position and acceleration sensors for the mice might not be a bad thing.
