Has anyone tried to run SecondLife on a Linux system?

what is the best emulator to run it under (eg Wine), are all the same features available if it does work?

IIRC there is a native Linux Client.

You may have to compile it though.

Linux Clients

Hello Chaos,

There is a linux client available, both in source and binary format.

I've been using the binary/executable clients on both debian and Ubuntu
for quite awhile now with hardly any issues.

The Release Candidates (RC) seems to be stable and voice works as well.

For the Release Candidates, look for "Test Viewers"... Select Linux

I hope that helps. ^_^

Hihi!

I'm running version 1.20.15.92456 on Fedora Core 8 with almost no problems what so ever. The only major issue that I'm seeing is probably because the machine has a crappy video card in it.

Kitsy ^.^

Edited to add:
I'm using the binary. I've never been able to compile the client yet.

Many ways to go

You can download the official .tar.bz2 tarballs from http:secondlife.com/support/downloads.php ; the current release viewer, the Release Candidate, and the beta grid client are all available there. You can download third party viewers for Linux; perhaps the most notable is the Cool SL Viewer by Henri Beauchamp (available at http://sldev.free.fr/ ), which has some additional non-LL patches and has Restrained Life included in the build (but turned off by default). Finally, you can get Debian packages of the viewer from ByteMe: http://www.byteme.org.uk/secondlife-amd64/apt-get-a-secondlife.html

Any of those viewers should work fine on your Debian system so long as you have the non-free video drivers from NVidia (preferred) or ATI installed. (Intel graphics, although supported on Windows and Mac, are not yet supported by the Linux viewer due to the lack of suitable video drivers.) So far as I know, none of the free drivers have sufficient OpenGL support to run the viewer.

If you get one of the tarballs, you unpack it by typing "tar xvjf <sl-viewer-file name>" in a terminal window. Then go to the directory that was created and type "./secondlife &". If you install the Debian package the viewer will be in your path, so you can just type "secondlife &" in a terminal.
