Sure there is a way, best look in search for a Sand Box there is usualy help there, I will be in World soon you can send me a message by looking in search under People Tab and I can take you to some decent freebie place and can help you out from there. Doraus Munster might see you soon

Also use SEARCH > Events tab > category > Education > type in NCI in the white search box > you'll get a list of that day's classes. Doesn't matter, just pick one of the centers and go there.
Any of the NCI places will be a great way to learn all kinds of stuff about SL. There are often volunteers there to help and explain. Free notecards are available to help you with the basics and there are classes everyday. There are parties for newbies and all NCI Centers are safe areas.
You'd be surprised how many older residets still park their avatars in an out of the way spot before logging off.

You can set home to any hub - NCI ones are nicer, as someone else has said.
You can also set home to a few other places in SL, if you join the group that owns the land. Forum Cartel Hangout is one such place.
