What exactly do you have to do for these roles? I know that if you're a bouncer then you try to keep people from disrupting the event you are working at, but how exactly do you do that? How can you get someone out of a club who's doing stupid stuff?

and what exactly is a host's duties?

BTW, I am a new SLer and am trying to decide what profession i want to go to into...

Right click, more, eject

It's that easy.

Host/Hostess? Greet people, make conversation, do whatever is required to maintain the smooth running of the event and in my case... right click more eject lol

If you do get hired on and trusted. Then you will receive powers to eject and ban a resident from the parcel.
There is quite a bit that goes on involving security/bouncer like learning how to find those image attackers. and how to find sound greifers etc. Having simple knowledge of greifing tools and attack methods helps in locating troublesome residents.

Hosting is basically greeting guests as they come in. They basically set the pace in chat and making the guests feel welcome. They Also Host events, take votes, etc etc.

Keep in mind that by far the best deal for getting money in SL is just to whip out your credit card and buy it. Unless one of the jobs you're considering sounds like a fun way to spend time anyway, when you do the math at ~275 lindens to a dollar most jobs don't pay squat for the time you put into them.

SL is not like other games, like the Sims, where getting a job is necessary to keep your character happy. I haven't played the Sims since I was a teenager but I do remember when it first came out they needed jobs and to be fed constantly! Anyways, I guess to determine what job you should have, ask yourself WHY you want to work in SL, rather than explore or play. If it's for the money, forget about it. After a week of SL work, you may be able to afford a skin, an outfit, but not much else. The best jobs are ones you don't have to go to :)

I wish I had the money to do that. but alas, I don't. I got laid off a few weeks ago and am at my wits end trying to support a pregnant woman and our 1 year old daughter.

Well, I wouldn't waste time thinking SL will put enough in your bank account to do that. Out of the thousands of "businesses" in SL only a few make enough real money to buy their way into a movie theater.........once every other month or so.

Oh, I know that it won't do that, I just wanted a job to be able to make money to support my Second Life character, not support me in the 1st life. I just meant that I can't afford to put real money into it.

lol that sounds more like camping than a job.
a skin and an outfit?
i guess it depends on how good you are at your job and where you are working..
i was leasing a sim and clogging my inventory with my job :D

but yes it is more fun now just learning more about building and scripting and taking classes..
it's less headaches no drama and you learn to make some really amazing things.. ;)

Go take a lot of classes, most are free. You just might discover a talent or knack that could lead to something.

Scripting is in high demand and there are all kinds of scripters. Learn to build and keep practicing, you never know when there will be a sponsored building contest with a linden money prize.

People are always on the lookout for really good walking animations. If you lean towards working with animations, the list is endless for possibilities. Find what you enjoy doing and create your own niche.

Search > Events > category > scroll down to Education in the drop down menu > click the small blue search button. You'll see the next few days list of classes all over SL.

Give it a try and I bet you'll be glad you did.
