Creating a Swaying Effect on Objects

I am creating a devil's tail for my first hosting gig at the Upside Down Club later today, and the theme is Devils and Horns.

What I would like to know is how do I get my tail to sway as I dance? I did create the object (it was simple) and save it as an object, but it won't allow me to create the swaying effect on the linked object. Is there anything I missed?

do you want it to twitch or just move when you dance?

If it is just movement, try making the tail part as a flexy

also check over in the building forum, might find something there that will help, or someone with more knowledge about creating tails

also if the tip is a separate prim for the forked end thing, that will eliminate the ability to have it flexy (because flexy's do not join in that way)

there are ways it can be done with textures

why not just look for an inexpensive or free devil tail and see how they did it

Create a flexi? Which I cannot afford with my time.

Is there some place where I could find a free devils costume (like for Halloween)?

All you have to do is click the Flexible Path button, takes less than 1 second, sure you have that much time. :)

So what code would you recommend for such effect?

Under the features tab:

Flexible Path selected already.

Softness: ?
Gravity: ?
Drag: ?
Wind: ?
Tension: ?
Force X: ?
Force Y: ?
Force Z: ?

Which numbers would I have to use in those fields?

Also, I did save it as an object before, but it won't allow me to creating the swaying of the linked object.

Do I have to work on each prim (I only have two to create - the pointy end, and the long tail itself) to get the swaying effect?

I would just try clicking the flexible path button for each prim and then trying it out at its base settings to see how it looks. Then you can play with the numbers to see what effect they have, usually the basic settings work fine for me.

Good luck with the tail I hope it works out for you. :)

Uh oh. If one attaches something to the moving end of a flexi, it won't move with that end.

(One day, and I suspect soon, flexible sculpties will make all this easier; there's a 3rd party viewer out that does this already.)

In the meantime... yuck. One could script a little "swisher" that rotates the tail back and forth over some path, but it would be pretty laggy. Some furries must remember how this was done before flexies were available.

Another option might be to make just one long flexi, and get the "pointy end" effect using an alpha'd texture. Not sure how good that would look.

What? Where?! I MUST KNOW!

Ahem...as for complex flexi tails, I know how to do it but don't know how to explain...It is possible to have a "tip" on a flexi tail, but it isn't foolproof (the pieces of the tail will seperate at times, especially in laggy areas) Basically, for a tipped tail like what the OP wants, you would take a flexi cylinder, clone it, change the clone to a flexi cube that is totally flat, and place an alpha texture of the forked tip on this cube. The two prims, as long as they're exactly the same length and have exactly the same root position, will move together (mostly).

EDIT: Nevermind, I found the test viewer. It won't run for me, but I'm glad to know someone is working on flexi sculpts...

Well, it is only over an hour before I do start training as hostess, and all I have is this outfit to wear this evening (which, I think, is the next best thing to being dressed as a devil):

At least there are devil horns involved, and it beats no devilish features at all.

What do you folks think of the outfit?

And I did receive a glowing devil's halo this morning also. I can provide a picture of it another time.

Well, I went to my first hosting gig today, and it was a blast. The manager admired my new outfit very much, and I'm glad I enjoyed myself.

Now to look forward to my next gig - Disco night. Too bad Pyrite has RL commitments on Friday nights.
