What do folks think of the camera in Second Life 1.20.9 ?

There's options in Preferences Input & Camera for Camera Follow Distance, Camera Transition Time, and Camera Smoothing.

I don't know how long these have been there, but I just discoved them tonight. I was motivated to look there because the camera seems to go nuts at times, but that's nothing new.

Are these camera options in preferences too old to talk about?

Maybe it's just exasperation, the old "springiness" setting seemed to be safe to ignore on its default while the new settings seem to be always wrong no matter how they get fiddled :p

That new camera smoothing option seems to be there for no reason but to induce nausea, I'm much happier with it shut off.

It doesn't have a "reset to default" option. The instant I changed the values, I forgot what the defaults were. That's how my memory works these days, when I look up a number in the phone book, I often have to do it twice, remember the first three digits, punch them in, look back to the phone book, read the last four digits, punch them in. I don't hold the entire 7 digit number long enough to turn my head from the phone book to the phone and puch all seven in at once.

So a reset to default value would be nice.

I played with a bit and left it at follow distance 0, transition time .5, smoothing 0.

That old springiness thing, I'd fiddle with that when the camera was being extra wonky, but it never seemed to make any difference.

The camera in the new viewer seems to be more weirdness prone than the older ones.

Here are the corresponding debug settings and the defaults, for getting them back if experiments go wrong.

"Camera Smoothing", CameraPositionSmoothing, 1.000
"Camera Transition Time", ZoomTime, 0.400
"Camera Follow Distance", DynamicCameraStrength, 2.000
