Hi, I've been learning how to make prims , at the Ivory Tower. I have a question that I hope you can help me with. I know that it is possible to make a prim & use it to store things. Has anybody had any trouble doing this? The Ivory Tower thinks it's risky. I would like to be able to store somethings so that I don't have to carry everthing around with me. Has anybody done this & did you have any trouble? Thanks

Hi Silena,

The simplest way to do this is to rez a box, right-click and in the eit menu open the contents tab, then drag whatever it is you want to store from your inventory into the contents of the box. Name the box something relevant and there you go. You could even throw a pretty texture at it to make it more attractive.
I have lots of storage boxes, both in my invy and hanging around at home. Neve rhad a problem with them

Hope this help

:)

Hi Silena,

I back up items in boxes that I keep in my skybox. So for I haven't had any problems at all. As a double measure I keep them backed up with an alt also, but I haven't had any problems with the boxes at all so far.

Er.. Carry everything around with you? Not sure what you mean there.

Keeping stuff in a prim isn't too dangerous but keeping it in inventory is even safer.

When you creat this box an dput your prims in it. Does it know how many prims are in there?

What I am trying to say I am allowed so many prims at my house. If I put a bunch of stuff in the box would that then count as one prim in my prim count?

Hi Bec,

I believe you can put up to 40 items in a box. This box then counts as one prim.

Happy storing :)

If you put ten items in a box it all counts as 1 prim. :)

There's some systems out there (I appreciate that this is not a direct answer :) ) which can store things and then you are able to retrieve them wherever you are in world. Thinking specifically of the Pixeltrix stuff here.

You can make a suit case, purse, backpack,etc and store things in content tab, objects, landmarks or photos that are full permission on a notecard and that notecard put in content tab but I strong suggest you keep copy of whatever you carry at home and in your inventory.
Because sometimes the asset or land server can be whacky sometimes things get buggy and don't work well. Land based server tends to be bit more stable but even then things get strange sometimes..... even notecards sometimes get really strange.
I have put over hundred or more notecards, textures,etc in content tab.

I don't think there is a limit, if there is, then it must be quite high. I have put 100's of things in boxes, just takes longer to load the contents tab

The Ivory Tower thinks it's risky.

The risk is just this: sometimes the servers loose stuff. This is much rarer than it once was and is often fixed a few days later if you submit a ticket but it still can happen. If you have a 10,000 freebie items on you and one storage box which has everything you ever bought stored in it, Murphy's law says the one item you will loss is the box.'

At this time the risk is very small, but it is still there.

I don't know what the limit is, but it has to be more than that. I have some hippovend servers (single prim) with 50 products each. That's 50 boxed items, 50 notecards and 50 textures on top of the dozen or so scripts and configuration cards that run the server. My guess would be 255, just like making a linked object, but I could be wrong.

Hi, Bec. I've been packing things in prims & taking the prims back into my inventory. So far, I haven't found an upper limit, but I think the highest number of items I've stored in a single prim is around 350. Takes a while for the contents tab to load.

You can also pack things into prims, then put the prims in a master prim. This is inconvenient for things you use often, but good for long-term storage. This is NOT the same as making an object from more than one prim. Adding prims to the contents tab of another prim does not increase your prim count. Theoretically, you could stuff your entire inventory into a single prim, and have just 1 prim on your land, or just 1 inventory item.

Personally, I wouldn't go that far. It would be tempting Murphy.

I take everything back into my inventory, but by nesting prims I'm able to keep the total inventory count low. This helps reduce lag on my system. One prim is one object, no matter how much stuff you've crammed into it. Just remember to delete any extra copies of things and then take out the trash.

Oh, and give everything a useful name, so you'll know what you've got. It can also be helpful to create a notecard for each prim. Drop those into a prim in inventory for rezzing at home or at a sandbox, or make a Prim Contents folder in the Notecard folder of your inventory so you can see what you have wherever you are.

I store extra items in prims too, but I don't waste prims on my parcels by having them rezzed
in world.

I have a cool little script that spits out in llOwnerSay a list of the contents with their UUID,
which I then cut and paste into a notecard which is called
~~~~~~Table of Contents~~~~~~~. The tildas (~) usually puts the TOC at the top of
the list in the contents tab.
The notecard is duplicated on my harddrive with the UUID of the storage prim. Using Open
Office Writer, I can find the particular item I'm looking for with the search function, should I
need that item. And, because I have the UUID, LL can't say they can't help me the next time
their servers lose a L10K item.
See, last time I lost something to an asset server issue, LL required the UUID to retrieve it.
Since I didn't have the UUID, I was SOL. So, now I have a record of what's where and the
UUID's of the different items to boot.
A
Edit to add: I also don't throw away anything. Trash gets packed in the same way, but the master trash prim gets the sub prims labeled with the date of deletion. I can't tell you how many times I've had to go back and pull something out of trash from three weeks ago........
If it weren't for the above, my modest (IMO) 14K inventory would be 45-50K.
I've recently put a lot of my older objects, landmarks, textures etc into 'invoboxes' - things I'm unlikely to need again unless I need to rebuild something but that I'm not quite ready to trash. Cuts down the size of the inventory quite a lot as the box counts as one item even if it contains 50.
My main use for boxing stuff up, though, as in general in SL, is with items for sale.
Silena, one thing to be aware of with storage boxes: it is best to keep copiable items separate from non-copiable. If you have them mixed, you may accidently delete some non-copiable items when you are updating your storage box.
Also, if you keep them separate, you keep an extra copy of the copiable storage boxes somewhere.
And yes, the limit is high, I know I've put close to 200 items in a single box.
I don't know what the limit is, but it has to be more than that.
:o
/me slaps forehead...... I think I was confused with the number of items you can transfer to someone else in one go.
I've also got boxes with a gazillion items in them.
Thanks, I think I'll use my containers for back-up too. If anything I make can be opened & used for storage, that means all my plant stands can hold some of my back-up files. hmmm it gives me ideas......
