I saw someone with a special hat or their avatar looks like a dragon. How are these kind of avatars created? Are they created from the clothing template ? Or 3D-Max? But as far as I know, you can't upload the file of other 3D softwares.

What they do is create objects, or prims, that attach to different parts of the avatar body. For example, the creator will make a dragon leg, or parts of the dragon leg, and attach each part to the different areas of the leg (thigh, lower leg, foot.) The avatar shape is usually shrunk down to a very thin, probably sort of warped shape that will fit into the prim attachments. This continues with the rest of the shape, adding attachments to hide the rest of the shape.

It is all done with prim attachments. Just like hair and shoes etc they make prim shapes which attach to the body. This covers up the actual avatar with a new shape and look.

Some will also have scripts etc to make the dragon breathe fire or whatever. This is where it starts to become more complicated so I am not going into it because I am no expert.
