Hi there, I'm currently writing an essay for a University project on a topic I have chosen - "Social Art". For this, I want to explore artworks which have been created either within a social environment or by multiples of people - and since Second Life is at least one of them I thought this would be the best place to start. I've looked at a few examples on the Internet, but I wanted to know if there were any notable artists or groups of artists who regularly produce and exhibit their work on or through Second Life. If anyone knows of anyone please reply . Cheers, Satanic.

go inworld, open search, open the places tab and then type in "art" in your search. TP to all the different galleries and places that exhibit art!

I would start on Flickr A lot of SLers post their art there. If you do a search on Second Life you'll find plenty of groups.

From: Satanic Flux Hi there, I'm currently writing an essay for a University project on a topic I have chosen - "Social Art". More artists than you imagine. I have much artwork by many artists but have removed 90% of it as I am bulding my home/gallery in Zindra where artistic freedom is allowed. I actually destroyed much art when I felt that no one really cared anyway and I felt down at my heels. I still have good stuff however - European and USA artists and some Aussie contemporray artists working in metaverse and real. If you fly around sl you will encounter PG areas where nudity is not allowed so you wont even get to see any representational art that displays or depicts the nude. This can be a problem for artists and is prolly one of the very few places on the web (or in the real world) where art galleries are censored in this way. Mature land is better But Adult allows fo rmore freedom. So politcal social and human statements in 2D format are likelier there. I am off-world for a few days otherwise I would invite you to my galleries. I have also been reported by visitors to my galleries so I would hesitate before I invite you anyway. However, if time is not a problem write me a proper note and I'll see what I can do. Dont IM me I get too filled up. This is a genuine offer and am more then willing to help a student. Just dont expect me to really be overwhelmed by education and degrees and crap liek that. Jig Chippewa. PS also check the notecard outside any art gallery which will provide info for gallery owners etc. Reputable artists in sl will usually own a gallery or have an in-world agent who follows same tenets at real agents. I suggest you stay away from "Look What I Can Do!!!" artists and seek genuine sl galleries. Prices vary if you wish to buy. I must ask that you do not photograpj or copy any artwork in sl - I trust you are decent in this manner. If I found you cheating me in what I do in real, I would hound you with lawyers and agents till the end of time. Here its harder so I just hope you are a good person for all artists' sakes.

Yeah - I just ran across a sim/group called Art Book or something like that. It's an artists' collective. I'll see if I can find a LM.

This is not (yet) in SL, but for a collaborative environment for creating art, mostly indie movies and books, check out Wreckamovie.com

If "social art" can include sound installations, Google for:
SL5B "Message in a Bottle"
and for:
whisperbox "Robbie Dingo"
