My question pertains to the number of alternate avatars allowed in a basic membership as opposed to a premium account? In other words; how many avatars could one person be running under either a basic or premium account?

From: Briana Dawson I believe it is 5 total - including primary. I could be wrong. Hope not. Yes it's 5 .... here's the blob from the Knowledge Base: From: someone How many alts may I have?
Currently, you can create as many additional Basic or Premium accounts as you want to pay for, with the following limitations:
* You can create up to five accounts per household. * You can create no more than two accounts in a single 24-hour period.
We do require that alt accounts adhere to all of our policies. For example, by agreeing to our Terms of Service (TOS)you agree to provide truthful and accurate information about yourself when you register for accounts -- that includes not only your contact information and real name but also whether this is your first free Basic account or a new alt (see TOS section 2.1). People who do not provide truthful information risk losing their accounts.

There was a story a few months ago about someone who was banned after creating 500 alts. So I would guess there is some wiggle room between 5 and 500.

Infinite, or as many as LL allows you, at their whim.
They have a limit of 5 "on the books" but which they only rarely and selectively enforce, and they reserve the right to limit you to fewer than that, if they choose. But unless you misuse the alts, you can create as many as you want, free or Premium.
They do limit you to creating no more than two per day, however, and generally limit how many can be on a single credit card for payment info, or how many can use the same e-mail address.

Hmm...that IS enforced. You can get around it by using different login websites that let you grab specially selected surnames. But i know that i have been prevented from making more than 5 on my main account from my home, and on a brand new account from another computer not in my house i was also limited to 5. So as far as i know the limiting is done by IP address or something to that end.

No, they don't enforce it all the time, because I have more than 5, all created from the same home network, which LL sees as a single IP address of my home router. And I have done nothing at all to trick the router into changing that IP address.
They won't let you put more than 5 on a credit card, and lately they have limited it to one account per e-mail address, and no more than two created per day.

I have over 10 - same account. Recently i was limited from creating any more. Though as i said, when i created from an office, i was limited to 5 (no credit card) - all created within minutes of each other. I know people who create more than 5 using 3rd party websites that do surname hunting.

My most recent ones were a few months ago. I have about a dozen, created from late 2005 to present, mostly for roleplaying options, like being able to have a maid or a guard in my castle at the same time as myself. I'm considering making two more, but am waiting for a surname I like for them. Didn't care for the selection when I looked last week. I'll let you know if I have any difficulty creating them.

Do you use those other websites that do the Surname hunting? That is how i got the Dawson Brianna account (a friend actually).

New avatar, created today, using the normal LL account creation process. Had no issues creating it.
I've used SLNAMEWATCH to identify that interesting names were available, but all my accounts so far have been created via the LL account creation pages.

I can verify that certain portals will reject your e-mail if it's been previously used, even if it only has one av on it with a "email already registered with second life" error message. dunno if that applies to the main portal.

I use an individual e-mail address for each account, but that's just to keep matters tidy. It's definitely not a requirement, as the alts have been on one single mailbox before. As for the 5 alt limit ... it wouldn't be SL if the rules weren't enforced in an inconsistent, arbitrary and unpredicatable way, now would it?
