Ok....I'm gonna bite the voice bullet and try it. I'm normally pretty much a loner in SL because I just explore and take pics....but last night I met a very nice couple at Sunset Jazz and they asked if I did voice....and I think I would have enjoyed chatting with them.... So....my question is....is it relatively simple to get started with voice? Somewhere I have a microphone for this PC but no head set...so I guess I need that..... but beyond that...is it just a matter of enabling voice in-world?? I just need some basic guidance and hopefully I wont be opening a can of worms in world, hehe.

When I set mine up I just looked at Torely's video Tutorial. I couldn't get a link to the acutual "getting started" one but you can search for voice in the tutorial section.

Milla, it's pretty easy. Here's some hints:
-- Try it first with someone who has it working already. I think you're a cartel member - if you just ask in cartel chat if someone can drop by the hangout and try it with you, I'm sure someone will be willing. Or send me an IM, maybe we can sync up.
-- SL voice, for some reason, is very low in volume compared to all other things. You may have to really crank up the headset volume on both your PC as well as SL controls.
-- After you enable voice, and after every time you login, you have to turn on your mic (by clicking it in the voice toolbar) before you can be heard!
-- If you want to use voice to communicate with someone specific while exploring or at a party, you should use a call (button in the IM window) instead of voice chat. Voice chat volume is proportional to proximity, of either avatar or camera. Call volume is just like a phone - always the same.
Good luck! .

Your mic needs to be plugged in BEFORE you log in, in my experience. You can't just plug it in after a session has started.

From: Cristalle Karami Your mic needs to be plugged in BEFORE you log in, in my experience. You can't just plug it in after a session has started. If your mic plugs into the mic input on your soundcard or computer, you can plug it in any time. I do that a lot. Maybe you're using a USB mic which probably would have to be initialized.

It works just fine! And yeah it's a USB set up which is fine....it's not like I'm going to be using it all the time anyway. The only thing that drives me nuts tho is that all sound is filtered thru the head set and it drives me batty to have anything on my ear for very long. Still....it's quite fun to hear a voice and I can understand why folks are drawn to it....it's a very 'real' connection in a very unreal world.

I tend to be to loud, I use a mixer and live music set up, and tend to loop everyone back through all the time I like voice as long as the talkers are not LOCKING the mic ON !! please use push/middle mouse/click to talk ..please!) ok my question to hijack the thread... has anyone found a way on a lap top with an intergrated mic, to shut that one off and just use the mic on the sound card (1/4 mini jack) the headphone side is fine cuts the lap top speakers off sends to headphone plug. But the mic stays on no mater what I set (VISTA and I am 2 months new to Vista) I have found there are so many more voice users in the past few months past year. I have always allowed it on my lands and slowly I notice more and more. the only issue is its very choppy at times and if 2-3 or more try talking at the same time.. well .. LOL but I am wanting to do it without hurting everyone's ears so any help would be great.
