The only way is to start two brand new AV's.

Your avatar name shouldn't be your account name, anyway.

I don't understand the poll- are u asking if we should be allowed to change names? or if we personally want to? I would never change my name but that is me- I would think it would be good if we could for those that would want to do it. Me- nope, not in a million years.

I have multiple accounts: Argent Stonecutter, Argent David, and so on. Each of these accounts has its own inventory, linden balance, tier, US$ credit, and so on.

Since my account name is my user name, anyone who knows my name has one of the two pieces of information needed to access my account, automatically. The other is my password.

What LL should do is to give me an account name (maybe based on my email address, maybe something arbitrary like 1254162AJ, maybe something I pick like Argent007). Once i log in, then I would select whether I'm logging in as Argent David, or Argent Stonecutter, or whatever.

Inventory might be associated with the name, or with the account. US$ balance, payment info, etcetera, would be shared. The association between my name in-world and my account would, of course, only be known to Linden Lab.

This would have a number of advantages. The top three ones that come to mind are:

1. Changing your name would be less of an impact on LL's database. (the relevance here)
2. Tracking alts would be easier.
3. Security would be improved, because you wouldn't automatically know everyone's account names.

To answer the OP:

LL only allows name changes in fairly extreme circumstances; usually when someone has picked something offensive and they are forced to change it. Not liking your name or becoming partnered are not going to be enough.

The only option to get a new name, as Chris says, is to get a new account. You might, if you are lucky, get a surname to match your partner's name (or vice versa). Or you could both get new accounts with matching surnames. A new account cannot access the inventory of an old account, apart from passing any transferable items across (anything you'd normally be able to give away to another resident).

I don't want to change my name, but I can see why people would. It's never made clear enough in account creation that the name you choose is the name you'll be stuck with and known by for the rest of your SLife. It'd be a nice option for either partner to adopt the other's surname if the firstname-surname combination was free.

I've often thought that brand new residents (not that the OP is brand new) should have temporary names until they've been in world for a couple of weeks to a month to get the feel of the culture, then start their avatar in earnest with the option to pick a new name. So many come in with the mindset they have to have unweildy AOL names with numbers. But really the same thing can be achieved just by starting a new account.

I'm happy with my name although the last name is fairly irrelevant. If I had waited a few months I could have been Weston Weston. I think I missed that opportunity.

While it wouldn't REALLY stop the alts issue, since people could sign up for more than one "account", it's an awesome idea.

Where's a jira on this that I can vote on?

Not really the same. That jira just suggests that the client should remember the various log-in details used on that computer. That's great for home use, not so awesome on a shared computer. What Argent was suggesting was the creation of a whole new log-in scheme.

Log-in: Winter221673
Pass-word: *******

Once logged in to the system, you'd get a choice of associated avatars.

Choose an avatar:
..........Winter Ventura
..........Accounting Binder
..........Update Magic

Then the assets and/or money could belong to "Winter221673" rather than JUST to "Winter Ventura". Some services refer to this as a passport. One s3t of contact info, one s3t of payment info, one age verification, multiple screen names.

It's an interesting idea, and I'd definitely vote for it, just to have the Lindens consider the idea, and consider implementing something along those lines. Even if it wouldn't work out, I still think the idea has merit.

In "that" thread was mentioned by Blondin that alt-linking is being looked at. What Argent detail s above is the way I hope LL do it. One real-world main account to manage my money and pay the bills with, as many avatars inworld as I need or want. And all my avatars have the same PIU/AV inworld status as my real-world main. Be great when we can do this.

Edit: And I want each of my avatars to be able to have their own Linden$ balance and email addresses and all the other stuff we got now.

Voted. This is my second try at being in SL. My alt is Sjackb Northman and I would change that one if I had the chance (that was my first try at SL). I took a lot more care picking out the name for my Version 2 Jackie! J.

Voted, and added a comment regarding using the master login account here on the website as well; it would be very useful to be able to switch rapidly between Account Details for each alt. Should that be a sub-issue?
