I have been a resident of SL for almost a yr now....I am not using the RC viewer and have not had to update anything in awhile now. Well, on Sat I used Sl all day...had a great meeting for our new group and SL ran unusually well for me. Later, I logged out....and went to live RL for a bit.
A few hours later, I went to log back on and my name was not automatically in the log on screen even though my password was. BTW, nobody else has access to my computer. So, I fill out my SL name, log on, and lo and behold, SL sees me as a noob. Although I rezz in at home and not on Orientation Island, all the old pop up tips come up when I click on anything. It asked me right away to set my media stream requirements. It continued until I logged out for the last time on Sunday. Yes, I cleared cache and logged off and on a few different times.
I didn't change any preferences or anything. Anyone else seeing this?

This has never happened to me... Are you _sure_ you don't have another viewer on your desktop? One you downloaded, but never used?

Yes because at one point I had to completely uninstall all SL programs on my computer and reinstalled the windlight viewer. That was almost a month ago now...it is the only one I have on my computer.

I'm wondering if it might have something to do with the server updates they have been performing. Check out the blog..... if your viewer hasn't changed.....it could just be a glitch that's running when they have done one of the updates that doesn't require us to download a new viewer. Just a guess tho..... I know this happens every time a new viewer is installed....but for the most part it doesn't really effect anything except for it being a pain in the ass to reset preferences.

I've seen this a few times. Plus, it resets my viewer sometimes for no reason, so I get told how to play SL :)

Seems that *something* is wiping out the character settings files; where they're stored differs by OS (on XP it's something like C:\Documents and Settings\yourWindows userName\Application Data\SecondLife\yourSL avatarName\), but not the same place as the cache files. The weird thing is that this was a known problem with one of the 1.20 RCs, but otherwise... not sure what would wipe those out between sessions. (Even if that location were volatile storage, like a memory stick, it's not obvious to me why it would wipe with a relog.)

Your config file got corrupted.

In Preferences, one of the last tabs is for enabling and disabling popups. If you click the Disable All button, you will be back to normal. You might also want to check your graphics settings if you're not using the auto default settings. (^_^)y

I've had that happened to me at least two times that I can remember. Again for no reason I could figure out. Luckily, it hasn't happened in quite awhile.

(Why do I feel that now because I said that, it will rear its ugly head again? Can anyone yell,,,, INCOMING!!!!)

The blanking out of the name has happened to me too - not sure if it coincided with a clean of cookies - or possible a switch in my IP.
