Hello there,
i hope someone can help me with my new PC. My old one has finally kicked the bucket so I will get a new one and I hope this one will work just fine. I do have some concerns running a 64-bit System as I have no clue if Second Life will work with it. I am not planning to run Vista but XP 64 bit. So is that possible? Or should I run Vista 64-bit or use a 32-bit Version? Wich would be acutally a step back as the processor and the Ram seem to actually need 64-bit System...
Here are the specs of the system:

It is all fine for SL.
Why get a 64bit system?
There is barely anything out there for them in the regular world.

A 32 bit system will leave less than 3GB of system memory available on that computer.
Unless you have old peripherals or software you know won't run under 64-bit Windows, there's no reason not to run Vista x64.
Second Life runs fine on 64-bit Windows.

Get a nVidia graphic card instead of the ATI. Get a Geforce 9800gtx+ (or the same card under the new name GTS250).

I've been running Vista 64 with my i7 system for awhile and have experienced no issues with Second Life.

I agree with the Nvidia comment, Sl seems to be biased I run on a 64 bit system and it seems to run ok.. I crash once in a while when loging into sl.. but that is about the extent of my problems. .d

Thanks for the Replies so far!
I kinda roamed around and found out about the Nvidia Cards being "better" with SL...
Would this Nividia Chip also work?
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285
The card comes with 1gb GDR

The 285 is a good high end card. It should work well. There have been some mixed reviews, though, over whether the dual-chip architecture of the GTX series is worthwhile. Some people have reported stability issues. I'd say get it from somewhere with a good return policy and see how it goes. You might be better off with a 9800.
I'll second the comments so far about nVidia being the way to go. ATI doesn't have a very god track record with SL. Their consistent refusal to follow OpenGL standards leads to compatibility issues. nVidia hardware and drivers have a much more solid performance record with SL (palletized texture bug from a few months ago notwithstanding).
I'll also second what's been said about the advantages of a 64-bit system. I switched to 64-bit about 8 or 9 months ago, and I'll never go back to 32-bit. It's amazing what a difference it makes to be able to use all the RAM in your machine. Plus, Vista x64's memory management is really excellent, blows XP away. I'm convinced that all the complaints about Vista stem from the 32-bit version. The 64-bit version is fantastic.
That said, there are a few things you need to watch out for with 64-bit. While almost all software tends to work just fine, not all devices will behave properly when "too much memory" is present. Pro audio devices with ASIO drivers, for example, crackle when there's more than 4GB of memory in the computer. For that reason, I'm still using an old XP machine on a KVM switch for my DAW instead of the modern machine I use for everything else. If you're not doing audio production, though, you won't have that particular problem, obviously. I just figured it was worth mentioning, just to be thorough.

Yeah, get a nVidia card and you'll be fine

From: Daniel Regenbogen Get a nVidia graphic card instead of the ATI. Get a Geforce 9800gtx+ (or the same card under the new name GTS250). I have a new 64-bit Vista system with the GTS250 card and SL works just fine. SL will tell you when you first launch it using that card that it is unsupported. But other than that message, SL works fine, no problems whatsoever.

Vista got a bad rap when it was first released because it was installed on a lot of underpowered computers where it never belonged. Vista 64 is likely to be more stable, and have more of a life than XP 64.
I have a similar system that runs SL just fine. But I have an Nvidia 9800. If I did it over, I'd have held out for a 280.
